  1. SL 35-0 (required rate 7.43)published at 4 overs

This Sri Lanka opening pair are allaying any nerves that might have existed after that Afghan onslaught. Twice Dilshan takes Hamid over the leg-side for four, the second helped by a full toss. At the moment Afghanistan's bowlers, usually potent, are not finding the right areas. However, congratulations should go to Hamid for his sky blue spikes. Snazzy.

Saw Ryan ten Doeschate at my cricket club car park. Turned out he was presenting the medals in the award ceremony.

What kind of madness drives a man to put his head in the firing line of white leather coming at 90mph. That's what Dilshan does when he plays the Dilscoop. One of the more remarkable sights in world cricket.

"We were raving about the pull shot, but that's a special one, the Dilscoop. So brave."

The Dilscoop! What a shot! Getting down on one knee, tucking the head in and scooping the ball miles over fine leg for six. Incredible.

Oh yes! Nailed it! Dilshan takes a couple of steps towards the pace of Dawlat Zadran and swats over mid-wicket for six beans.

"Afghanistan want to squeeze Sri Lanka early on, but I think they've got to have a slip in place. No point in defending from ball one, they've got to go for wickets."

  8. SL 12-0 (target 154)published at 2 overs

Good pace from Hassan, lift too taking the ball past the outside edge of the wafting Chandimal. Dilshan, familiar bandana poking underneath is helmet, is also swiping without success. Very good over from Hassan, only two from it.

  9. SL 10-0published at 1 over

Hamid Hassan, the pace bowler and one of sport's great headband-wearers, shares the new ball. A great character, Hassan. He's got Afghan flags painted on his cheeks.

Karim is round the wicket, tucking up the right-handed Chandimal. The keeper, the man axed as skipper midway through the successful campaign two years ago, walks across to sweep for four to get things going, then dances to loft over mid-wicket for the first maximum. Just the start Sri Lanka needed.

Spin to start. Karim Khan with his off-breaks.

Here come the umpires, sporting electric pink shirts that would have been more suited to Saturday Night Fever. Dinesh Chandimal and the destructive Tillakaratne Dilshan are following behind.

England, by the way, will have a keen eye on this chase. Both of these teams are in their group. Eoin Morgan's men are back in action against South Africa tomorrow.

Here comes the Sri Lankan reply. A statement of intent from the champions, or an almighty shock? Afghanistan, in their sky blue, are on the outfield, taking some final instructions from Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Essex were in town playing Ireland, and it was inevitably rained off. So there I was relieving myself in the toilets of my local pub, when Graham Gooch came in to do the same in the next urinal. We discussed his then recent innings of 333 against India, whilst trying to avoid awkward eye contact....
