  2. SL 85-2 (need 69 from 48 balls)published at 12 overs

The dependable Nabi returns, bowling his off-breaks round the wicket to the swiping Thisara. Risk-free cricket from Sri Lanka, watch by skipper Angelo Mathews, who has his chin on his hand. Singles aplenty, death by a thousand cuts for Afghanistan, noise levels in Kolkata reduced. Sri Lanka should get these.

  4. Afg 77-2 (target 154)published at 11 overs

More spin from Afghanistan, this time the leggies of Samiullah Shenwari. Whippy, low-armed stuff, pushing the ball through quickly. Sri Lanka happy to take the singles on offer, hanging in the chase, ready to explode when the moment arrives. They'll take the luck too, four byes coming when the ball misses everyone and skips away.

Dilshan had 21 from 10 balls but, at the start of this Karim Sadiq over, had slowed to 35 from 23. Thisara Perera, meanwhile, does what he has been sent out there to do, freeing his arms in a straight thwack for six.

  8. SL 60-2 (Rashid 2-0-9-1)published at 9 overs

Looking again, Thirimanne actually got an inside edge. Whatever happened, it was awful. In a chance to their card, Sri Lanka nudge Thisara Perera up the card. I'll wager it's to give it a biff.

Bowled him! I wonder if we're starting to see an upset. In fairness, Sri Lanka might be glad that Lahiru Thirimanne is out - he looked awful. Rashid Khan has put him out of his misery, turning a leg-break through a gap wider than a garage door.

  11. SL 54-1 (Dilshan 34 off 22)published at 8 overs

Dilshan has been starved of the strike for a couple of overs, his frustration showing with a reverse sweep that he misses. The rate, once under control, is back above eight. Tension palpable, crowd invested. Oh, that's nice from Dilshan, languidly cutting for four.

  13. SL 44-1 (need 110 from 78 balls)published at 7 overs

More spin, this time in shape of 17-year-old leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who was very impressive in the qualifiers. Thirimanne looks all over the place out there, not sure whether it's Christmas or bed time. He survives a shout for lbw, then finally gets off the mark. Sri Lanka have taken only nine runs off three overs.

  14. SL 41-1 (target 154)published at 6 overs

I tell you what, Nabi is getting some decent turn out there, spinning a spitting off-break past the edge of new man Lahiru Thirimanne. He delivers a wicket maiden at a crucial time for Afghanistan. He might well be the best cricketer outside of the Test nations.

"He's done it in his first over! Extremely rash from Chandimal. This partnership was looking threatening. But Sri Lanka is one good partnership away from pocketing this game."

    Chandimal c Shafiqullah b Nabi 18 (SL 41-1)

That's the wicket Afghanistan desperately needed. It's a pretty awful shot from Dinesh Chandimal, who runs down the track to the off-spin of Mohammad Nabi and swipes the ball into the hands of mid-wicket. That's pretty needless after such a good start to the runchase.

  18. Afg 41-0 (Chandimal 18, Dilshan 23)published at 5 overs

The explosive start by the Sri Lanka openers has already taken the sting out of the chase. The rate required is down below what it was at the beginning of the innings, and could be down to a run a ball sooner rather than later. Chandimal, second fiddle to Dilshan so far, nails a pull off Dawlat for four.
