    Afg 94-4 (Stanikzai 41 from 36)published at 15 overs

This really is some knock from Asghar Stanikzai. As Rome has fallen around him he's rebuilt with some mighty whallops. Yet another maximum is taken over the leg side, with the skipper then surviving a very good shout for leg before.

"We've seen some great catching at the rope - that was pretty ordinary. It really was there to be taken."

Sri Lanka can't afford another over of Siriwardana, so recall Ranaga Herath. Not that it matters to Stanikzai, who slog sweeps to cow corner. Should that be taken? I think it should. Instead, Lahiru Thirimanne pushes it over the top. Dropped and six.

Not sure if this counts, but my dad was once visited by Phil Tufnell to ask about having one of his children baptised (to be fair, my dad was a vicar).  According to my dad, when Mr T found out that he'd need to do a bit more than just rock up on a Sunday afternoon, he took his business elsewhere.

Back to the pace of the impressive Chameera, with the noise levels in Kolkata back up after those twin sixes. Chameera doesn't bother pitching it up and is in fact called wide for a bouncer over Stanikzai's head. When Stanikzai waits, he belts his bat so hard against the ground you'd think he is digging for oil. You know how I said the crowd is awake again? Even a single gets cheers and whistles.

"That first six was a real smack against the spin. Ashghar Stanikzai used the turn so well. Beautifully executed. Glorious, awesome stuff."

  7. 6 runs

And again! That's a better shot. Down on one knee, belting the ball straight for six more. Afghanistan have spluttered into life.

Good chat, Tee-J. Does that mean Bob isn't as grumpy as he seems? More left-arm spin, this time in the shape of Milinda Siriwardana. Hello, the first maximum of the game. Stakikzai dances and heaves, sending the white globe over mid-wicket for six of the best.

Tee-J: Saw Bob Willis literally ducking out of the tiny Pandora Inn near Falmouth when I was six, he taught me to bowl with a crab apple.

  10. Afg 59-4 (run-rate 4.92)published at 12 overs

Asghar Stanikzai doesn't know whether to stick or twist after witnessing the carnage from the other end. Afghanistan need runs to stay competitive, but pushing the accelerator brings risks they can't really afford. The Kolkata night has lost its noise, the Afghan fans have been silenced.

Nabi lbw Herath 3 (Afg 51-4)

Big wicket. The ever-dependable Mohammad Nabi comes and goes, trapped on the crease by one that turns from Rangana Herath. Afghanistan are going backwards - they've lost 3-15 in the past five overs.

Some excellent spots of cricketers, but I'm not sure we've hit the heights of randomness yet. I want to know if you've seen Chris Tremlett in a fancy dress shop. Or Jos Buttler pitching a tent. Halfway point. Sri Lanka well on top.

    Karim c Chandimal b Thisara 0 (Afg 46-3)

Hmmm, I just wonder if this is in danger of unraveling for Afghanistan. Karim Sadiq doesn't get off the mark for six balls then, from the seventh, runs at Thisara Perera, plays a horrible swipe, and can only edge behind.

  18. Afg 45-2 (Herath 2-0-7-1)published at 9 overs

Looking again, that might not have turned at all. The length was probably too full for the shot, and the ball slid on to the stumps, rather than turning. In fact, Herath is sliding more deliveries into new man Karim Sadiq. There's patches on the pitch that assist turn, others which don't. Herath, the old master, is using this to his advantage.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 8.1 overs

Noor Ali Zadran b Herath 20 (Afg 44-2)

Bowled him! Noor Ali Zadran has got into a right old tangle against Rangana Herath and lost his leg stump. We've had only one boundary since the fifth over and, in a bid to get things moving, Noor Ali goes on the sweep. He gets nothing on it, the ball turns a touch, and the leg peg is knocked back.
