I know that bar, Callum. Right outside the Opera House. Still the lanky, wiry Chameera, the unblemished cheeks of a man who has never had to bother with a razor. He gives Noor Ali some chin music, with the batsman taking the sort of evasive action that has coach Inzamam-ul-Haq giggling. That's not exactly supportive when you've got someone hurling leather at your head at 90mph.

  3. Afg 42-1 (Noor Ali 20, Asghar 11)published at 7 overs

Spin for the first time, the stocky Rangana Herath, his left-armers greeted by a very agricultural heave by Stanikzai through cow corner for four. There's turn, mind, enough to warrant a slip fielder.

    Russel Arnold
    Former Sri Lanka all-rounder

"Usually it's about getting through the first six overs without too much damage done. Sri Lanka would take this. But Afghanistan are playing a positive brand of cricket. Nothing to fear."

  5. Afg 36-1published at 6 overs

Very lively stuff from right-armer Chameera, 93mph. That must be the quickest we've seen in the tournament so far. Smooth run, exploding into a delivery stride that sends him out towards mid-off, very fast arm. If I was to dip into my cricketing cliches list, I'd be using "he hits the bat hard".

  7. Afg 33-1published at 5.2 overs

Not spin, but pace. Dushmantha Chameera, a man with good wheels, is into the attack. His run-up is huge, starting somewhere near the hot dog seller.

Jack Hector: Met John Emburey on a toll ferry from Sandbanks to Swanage in sunny Dorset.

Alex Hughes: Was sat next to Matt Prior and Scott Styris in the bar at Celtic Manor Golf Club the day before T20 finals day!

  9. Afg 30-1 (Noor Ali 17 off 15)published at 5 overs

Noor Ali, one of a trio of Zadrans, looks in good touch. When Mathews gets too straight, he guides off his hips to long leg for four. Melted chocolate off a spoon. On the Sri Lanka bench, the unfit, big-haired Lasith Malinga sits with his arms folded, an angry clown. Must be time for some spin soon.

Ed Capstick: I once saw Mark Ealham eating lonely bangers and mash on the cross channel ferry.

Nick Millman: Saw Nasser Hussain on Northern line. He was taking notes with cricket book typing them really fast into his phone...

Joe, Birmingham: Former Warwickshire seamer James Anyon was working the door at my 18th birthday party.

Captain Asghar Stanikzai is the new man, but he's at the other end as Noor Ali Zadran takes back-to-back boundaries off Nuwan Kulasekara. The first is quite fortunate to evade the man at cover, while the second is lovely clip off the front foot past mid-on.

    Shahzad c Chameera b Mathews 8 (Afg 12-1)

That's a big early wicket for Sri Lanka. Mohammad Shahzad has the potential to be destructive at the top of the order but has been frustrated in the early going. He looks to heave Angelo Mathews across the line, gets only a top edge that goes miles in the air to be held by Dushmantha Chameera.

    Shaun Pollock
    Ex-South Africa captain

"We've already seen how quick the outfield is here. Any shots hit hard and low will get their reward, they'll be hard to chase down."

  15. Afg 6-0published at 2 overs

Kulasekara is a wily, slippery old fox. Not much more than medium pace, but as accurate as the speaking clock with a little bit of wobble this way and that. Shahzad, belly modelled on David Boon, tries a dance to get through the in-field, but there's only three from the over.

Rob in Sheffield: Is it just me or would anyone else love to see the Afghans go far in this competition? As a nation they have had so much struggle and the team just play with a real passion and joy. Like the Leicester of cricket. Also, love a fast bowler whose run up starts in the car park.

  17. Afg 3-0published at 1 over

A hold up at the start of Nuwan Kulasekara's over. Shahzad has seen some sort of red light on the sightscreen and wants it moved. He must have good eyesight if he's letting that distract him. It's like spotting a pound coin from 100 yards.

Nice, Tony. Have we had any unusual interactions too? You know the type, had to ask Mike Atherton to change a pound. Stood next to Samit Patel in the queue at the chip shop.

Tidy start by skipper Mathews, his medium pace on a length on off stump. Three singles from it.
