Summary

  • Oman chase 155 with two balls to spare

  • Sorensen no-ball goes for four to seal Oman win

  • Oman's first game at global tournament

  • Bangladesh beat Netherlands in earlier game

  1. Ire 73-1published at 10 overs

Oman's sixth bowler is stocky, bespectacled off-spinner Amir Ali, who's thumped for a couple of fours by Wilson who has 16 from 14 balls.

With the recent international retirements of Daniel Vettori and Chris Rogers, Amir goes straight into the reckoning for the Bespectacled XI.

  2. Ire 64-1 (Porterfield 22, Wilson 8)published at 9 overs

Kaleem bowls, there's an appeal for a catch behind as Sultan takes one down the leg side - it brushed Wilson's shirt as he swept, but also seemed to take the glove on the way through, replays suggest. Skipper Porterfield also has the luck of the Irish as he gets a fortunate inside edge past the stumps which gives Sultan no chance and disappears for four.

  4. Ire 58-1published at 8 overs

Oman turn to their fifth bowler - leg-spinner Khawar Ali. I've been trying to think what Oman's kit reminds me of, it's a rather jazzy number - predominantly red, with a few dark green flashes. Shades of a Welsh football kit of a few years ago,, external when they let the designers go a bit mad? Khawar is quickly through his over, four singles from it, and the ICC-branded drummers are giving it some welly between overs.

  5. Ire 54-1 (Porterfield 15, Wilson 5)published at 7 overs

Surrey's Gary Wilson is in at number three - I didn't have time to introduce new bowler Kaleem, who has more of a hop, skip and a jump about his run-up than fellow left-arm spinner Lalcheta. Wilson is off the mark straight away, sweeping him for four to push Ireland's score past 50.

    Stirling c Maqsood b Kaleem 29 (Ire 48-1)

What a catch! New bowler Aamir Kaleem (another left-arm spinner) provokes an aggressive shot from Stirling, but Zeeshan Maqsood leaps through the air at short extra cover to take a STUNNING one-handed catch at full stretch. You'll want to watch that one when the in-play highlights appear!

Hang on, they're just checking to see if the ball was grounded... nothing wrong with that, and Stirling goes.

  11. Ire 46-0 (Porterfield 14, Stirling 27)published at 6 overs

Oman might wish they had Fidel Edwards to turn to here, as Ansari is bowling a little erratically and Porterfield helps himself to another four down the leg side, though it's signalled as leg byes. Ansari recovers somewhat to end the over with three dot balls.

"Everyone is shouting Malinga, but it reminds me of Fidel Edwards of the West Indies, only not the same pace."

  13. 6 runs

    Ire 42-0published at 5.2 overs

Oman make their first bowling change - it's India-born right-arm seamer Munis Ansari, whose balding pate makes him look a little more than his 29 years. He has a low, slingy action, but starts with a wide and is then struck for a four and a flat six over wide long-on by Porterfield. First maximum of the game.

  14. Ire 31-0 (Stirling 27 from 19 balls)published at 5 overs

It's still Ajay Lalcheta, whose first two overs have only cost six runs, and a couple of dot balls force Stirling to break the shackles, come down the track and go for the big hit - it's not perfectly timed but goes for four over extra cover. Stirling then picks the length quickly and slog-sweeps for four - 24 of his 27 runs have come in boundaries.

  16. Ire 22-0 (Porterfield 4, Stirling 18)published at 4 overs

Bilal, a covering of stubble on his cheeks, is giving Stirling too much to hit here, straying down the leg side as the Middlesex right-hander helps one away for four with the field up. Only two boundary fielders in the first six overs means there's little margin for error. But a smart single off the last ball is the only other addition to the total.

  17. Ire 18-0published at 3 overs

Having bowled that maiden first up, Lalcheta ambles in for a second over, and captain Sultan Ahmed appeals for a stumping as he eagerly removes the bails - but Porterfield's back foot had remained grounded. A scampered single allows Stirling to face the spinner for the first time - and he whacks another four to his favoured extra cover boundary.

It's looking a little chilly out there - umpires Nigel Llong and Chris Gaffaney both have hot pink fleeces over their usual umpiring shirts. And Mr Llong also has a quick word with Oman about not deliberately throwing the ball into the ground.

  18. Ire 12-0 (Porterfield 3, Stirling 9)published at 2 overs

Left-arm seamer Bilal Khan takes the second over, and Ireland are up and running as right-hander Paul Stirling steers his first ball through the covers for four. A single brings Porterfield on strike, he lashes one through the covers and they have time to run three as Aamir Kaleem makes a great stop on the boundary to save four. But for the second time in the over, Bilal serves one up in the slot for Stirling to punch another four through the covers. Two contrasting overs.

"If you want a figure for a par score, I'd say about 160."

  20. Ire 0-0published at 1 over

The new ball goes to left-arm spinner Ajay Lalcheta - he has a slip in for the first ball of the match, which is then immediately removed.

Bowling to the left-handed Porterfield, Lalcheta virtually walks in to bowl rather than running - he could probably bowl from a standing start if he wanted - but Porterfield treats him with respect, and he starts with a maiden over.
