Captain William Porterfield and his opening partner Paul Stirling stride to the middle to begin Ireland's innings. Oman skipper Sultan Ahmed, who's also the wicketkeeper, dons a red helmet - they're going to begin with spin. Here we go.

Now it's "Ireland's Call", the special anthem used by teams who represent both the north and the Republic. Very stirring indeed, and it's sung lustily by the men in green - whose new green kit stands out brighter than ever before under the lights. The Green Cross Code Man would be very impressed.

  5. Pringle wishes Oman wellpublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2016

If you weren't aware, former England all-rounder Pringle was a consultant for Oman during their successful qualifying campaign.

Anthem time. Oman's is a new one on me, with quite a military-style drumbeat in the background - their players stand rigidly at attention, but look very proud to be representing their side on the big stage of international cricket for the first time.

Another entertaining innings yesterday was Mohammad Shahzad's 61 off 39 balls for Afghanistan against Scotland. Some powerful shots from the burly keeper-batsman.

Here's the best of Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal's 83 not out from 58 balls against the Dutch this morning.

  10. WATCH: The sturdiest bails ever?published at 13:49 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2016

As you have hopefully seen, you can watch in-game highlights clips from this tournament (and indeed all ICC events until 2019) here on the BBC Sport website.

This was an odd moment from today's early game. Mashrafe Mortaza's delivery to Tom Cooper is chopped right onto the stumps at pace by the Dutch batsman - just like that - but the ball rebounds safely away without dislodging the bails!

Maybe Cooper stuck some superglue on them?

  12. Boyd Rankin goes uptownpublished at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2016

Someone else who might especially enjoy today's game in the foothills of the Himalayas is Ireland pace bowler Boyd Rankin. He didn't have a particularly good time of it after switching allegiance to England - and two years after his only Test appearance, he's been back in green since the start of the year.

  13. Oman's big daypublished at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2016

I'm not someone who likes to hype sports events to an unnecessary level - but this is the biggest game in Oman's cricketing history.

They've only been a member of the International Cricket Council since 2000, gaining associate status in 2014. While their rise has not been as meteoric as that of Afghanistan, they are playing in a top-level ICC tournament for the very first time after success in last year's qualifying event., external

Skipper Sultan Ahmed looked a very proud man at the toss - as well he might be.

  14. Captains' viewspublished at 13:35 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2016

Ireland captain William Porterfield: "We'll see how it plays, but I'm confident of putting a total on the board."

Oman skipper Sultan Ahmed: "We have a very good balanced side, spinners and good pacers, and I think it will be a good contest."

Earlier today (in fact, less than half-an-hour ago), in-form Bangladesh saw off a spirited Netherlands side by eight runs, thanks to Tamim Iqbal who had virtually no meaningful support but made 83 not out from 58 balls. The Dutch gave it a good go, but ultimately fell short.
