"That over just shows how good a wicket it is. England will feel there is an opportunity to go on the attack. If these two stay in they are getting comfortably to 200."

With these two batting in tandem...

  3. Eng 83-3published at 11 overs

Benn goes quicker and flatter to prevent further maximums, but the damage is done. 16 runs off it as England - Buttler in particular - look to take this game to the Windies.

"England massively behind the rate and where they would like to be but this partnership is building nicely. You just feel now Badree has bowled out that they are building a platform for the end, and there is still Stokes to come."

  5. 6 runs

    Eng 79-3published at 10.2 overs

Those are enormous. Buttler dances down and plants Benn into the stand straight behind the bowler. No dancing down next ball, but the same result. Between the two, the 50 partnership comes up, off 33 balls.

  7. Eng 67-3published at 10 overs

Root is completely unflappable. Say it quietly, but these two are getting England back into this game. They are still way behind the required rate, but they have a foundation to have a go.

  8. Eng 65-3published at 9.4 overs

Andre Russell returns. Root pulls for two and then guides down to third man for a single. Buttler adds another run before Root helps a short ball to fine leg for four.

"When you are trying to get back into a game you have to target a couple of bowlers and Benn is not getting any turn. The pace it is coming on to the bat is more like a medium pacer so it is easier to hit."

Ian Bradley: Yet again Root has built a foundation without apparently playing any shots, absolute freak.

Tahir Valli: England's tournament has gone this way anyway. And somehow they always pull it out the bag! Keep the faith.

  11. Eng 57-3 (Root 31, Buttler 20)published at 9 overs

That is more like it. Buttler goes big off Benn with a lofted extra-cover drive that clears the rope. Great hand speed. 10 off the over.

"You just sense these two are nicely set at the crease. This wicket is so good that if they can build the partnership they can still get to a nice total."

Wayne Hardy: If we can get to 100 without losing a wicket in the next 5 overs we still have a chance to win.

Balaji Mangalore: England - score 160 runs. We got a match on. bring the spinners in the beginning

  14. Eng 47-3published at 8 overs

Such is the class of Root that he scores at well over 100 strike-rate without playing a shot in anger. He and Buttler continue to rotate the strike. Sensible stuff. Consolidate and save the likes of Buttler and Stokes to go big later in the innings.

The towering figure of Carlos Brathwaite thunders in and is worked around the wicket for four more runs. Steady progress for England.

"Amid the mayhem Root has played really well. He has not taken any big risks but when the opportunity has come he has just found the gaps and hit it for four."

Don't abandon hope just yet, England fans. Unsurprisingly, the brilliant Badree bowls out. For the first time, Root takes the game to him and finds four with a lovely shot through the gap in the leg side. Nothing wild, just a proper cricket shot.
