Broad continues. Plenty of away-shape there, but Karunaratne isn't tempted to have a nibble. Another maiden.

"Australia were dismissed for under 120 in eight consecutive innings from 1886-1888. South Africa had six consecutive innings under 120 during the 1880-1890s but no other team has had more than three since then."

  3. SL 19-0published at 12:09 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Ooh, that's a good delivery from Woakes, probing fourth-stump line, just zipping past the outside edge of Silva. He begins with a maiden.

Karunaratne drives Broad through mid-off for a couple. Sri Lanka are looking to be a bit more positive this morning, and so far it's working for them. But England are about to bring on their nemesis of the first innings, Christopher Roger Woakes...

If you want wickets, the County Championship is the place to be this morning.

Champions Yorkshire slipped to 29-4 on the first day of the Roses match against Lancashire at Headingley Carnegie, while Hampshire reduced Middlesex to 14-2 at Merchant Taylors' School.

In Division Two, Worcestershire lost five early wickets against Gloucestershire, and Leicestershire were tottering on 19-3 against Kent.

  8. SL 17-0 (Karunaratne 10, Silva 6)published at 11:59 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

That's a nice shot from Silva, pressing forward to Anderson and driving him down the ground, He didn't quite time it, so they only get two.

Hugh Moxon: Is it bad that I'm disappointed England haven't taken a wicket already?

Chris Allan: I've asked here in the crowd and we're willing to field a scratch XI to give England some competition after lunch...

  10. SL 14-0published at 11:55 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Tell you what, the curse of 10 very nearly strikes again. Full and swinging in from Broad, it hits Silva on the pads, but it was probably going down. Silva picks up two with a nice punchy drive through the covers.

"Dangerous territory for Sri Lanka. In all three innings in this series, the first wicket has fallen on 10. Karunaratne the man to fall each time."

That's a really good point, Tony. And it's exacerbated, of course, by playing these Tests at Leeds and Durham before we've even reached June. It's all too easy to forget, of course, just how badly England have struggled in foreign conditions, most recently against Pakistan in the UAE of course. Karunaratne works a couple past square leg.

As woeful as Sri Lanka have been, I think it should be made more clear what a huge advantage it is for England to play in their own conditions. Nowhere else in the world are these conditions replicated - they are unique - and a few warm-up games cannot prepare overseas teams for what our bowlers have been playing in all their careers.

I've just found out that Dimuth Karunaratne's actual first name is Frank. Is that what his mum calls him when she's angry, do you think? I can just imagine her now, in her living room in Colombo, yelling 'Get your feet to the pitch of the ball, Frank!' at the TV. Karunaratne nudges a single to square leg, then times a flick off his pads nicely and picks up three.

Thomas DJH Stirk: All over by tea. Should have played a series with Ireland, would have got more fight from them.

If you're wondering when last time any Test team enforced the follow-on twice in a series was, it was New Zealand against West Indies in 2013-14. Karunaratne's done it again! Another inside edge squirts millimetres past the timbers. Graham Ford must be having kittens on the Sri Lanka balcony...

"The Sri Lankan batsmen's techniques aren't quite there and their inexperience is a factor. You'd still want to see a bit more fight."

As expected, Broad takes the cherry from the other end. Karunaratne stonewalls a maiden. Meanwhile, if you're expecting any England batting changes for the next Test, maybe don't. With just half an hour of this morning's County Championship matches played, Adam Lyth is out for 4, Sam Robson has been dismissed for 2, and Gary Ballance has got a quacker. Not a lot in reserve, is there?
