"That's a gift, thanks very much indeed. The pressure is released, fill your boots."

  2. Eng 51-1 (Cook 36, Compton 4)published at 16:21 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

Siriwardana gifts Cook a couple of absolute freebies, two juicy full tosses that the England captain belts to the boundary. Typically, there's no such charity for Compton. You never get a full toss when you need one, do you, but when you've got 10,000 Test match runs, you can't move for four-balls...

  3. Eng 40-1 (need 38)published at 16:19 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

Compton is gritting his way through this one. He pads out the rest of the over from Herath.

"Rod Tucker is smiling. Compton isn't, he looks grim-faced out there."

  5. Eng 40-1published at 16:15 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

It looked a bit leg-sidish, and so it proves. Compton fans breathe again...

  6. Umpire reviewpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

Nervous moments for Compo - Herath has hit him on the pads. Turned down initially, but we'll have another look...

"Cook I'm sure will be talking to Compton saying 'come on, stay calm, the runs will come. It doesn't matter if they come now or 18:10, the runs will come.'"

  8. Eng 40-1published at 16:12 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

Compton shuffles back and whips into the leg side to get off the mark - some good scampering makes it two. He bunts Siriwardana down the ground for another single. That should make the nerves slightly less jangly...

Rob Meech: The rule of Alex Hales: If he scores runs, the opposition are rubbish. If he fails, he is rubbish.

  10. Eng 37-1 (Cook 26, Compton 0)published at 16:10 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

Cook's hogging the strike here. He chews up a maiden from Herath. Now it's over to Compo again...

Annabel Gregory: Alastair Cook, congratulations on your 10,000 Test runs. Just goes to show what being a chorister does for you.

  12. Eng 37-1 (need 42)published at 16:08 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

Cook and Compton have many virtues, but they are not the sort of duo to polish off a run chase "in style". Unless by "in style" you mean "quite slowly, through a series of interminable leg-side nudges". Think a cautious creep up the garden path rather than a full-on sprint to the finish line. With Milinda Siriwardana getting a bit of turn, a Cook single is the only change from that over.

Russell Higginbotham: No-win situation for Compton. Get in and get out, you lose. Get in and get the runs, not enough to make a difference.

  14. Eng 36-1published at 16:05 British Summer Time 30 May 2016

That's a resolute defensive stroke from Compton to his first ball. Bat coming down like a big barn door. Get through that! Some time at the crease for Nicholas would be just what the doctor ordered.

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"He's probably trying to overhit the ball. Because of that one that spun a few balls before, he's thinking it's going to spin and it just skids on with the arm, hits the back leg and onto the stumps. He'll be disappointed with that because he's played so well in the series."

    Hales b Siriwardana 11 (Eng 35-1)

Oh dear. No sooner had he trotted out after a scone or two with a beaming smile on his face, Alex Hales is trudging back to the pavilion, face like thunder, smashing his gloved fist into his bat. He'd already had a big swish at Milinda Siriwardana, then he missed the armball next up. A chance for Nick Compton...

So, off we go again. Milinda Siriwardana is going to have first bowl after tea, Alex Hales on strike...

  18. Alastair Cook passes 10,000 Test runspublished at 15:59

Graham Gooch, former England captain, on TMS: "Cook is a player that is very valuable in a Test team. He not only occupies the crease, he goes big if he stays in and helps win matches so he's sort of a dying breed in cricket."

    BBC Test Match Special

Graham Gooch, former England captain, on TMS: "It's not just about the runs you score, it's about how many matches you win for your team and he's been at the forefront of that for the last decade. Generally, his technique and strength and willpower has been one of his strongest assets. He's a guy that gets the job done. He's an old-fashioned sort of Test player."
