Graham Gooch, former England captain, on TMS: "Anyone who interrupts my apple pie and custard on a Monday afternoon has to have done something special. He has been a fantastic servant to England and cricket in general, a great ambassador. To avergae 1,000 Test runs a year since debut is a phenomenal achievement. He's been the rock of the England batting for a decade and I hope he goes on for a while."

Stephan, thank you. When I left you at lunch, I was hoping for a Rangana Herath century, followed by Nick Compton heroically navigating the wreckage of England batting collapse to lead the hosts to a nailbiting two-wicket win. It hasn't quite materialised like that, but we do at least now know what colour boxers Ben Stokes favours: lime green. Not a fan.

Right, I'm out of here. If you see me again during this Test match, England have suffered an incredible collapse. James Gheerbrant will talk you through the rest of the day.

Naveed Afzal: Cook is the perfect example of HARD WORK... he's never had the technique or flamboyance of many others but what mental drive.

Steve: Incredible achievement by Cook. Has had his share of rough treatment but has stuck at it. Wonderful cricketer.

"Well done Alastair Cook, he's got that monkey off his back. It has seemed to free him a little bit, he's played a few nice shots afterwards. He's walking off with his chest puffed out and he'll get a nice ovation from the Durham members. England are all but victors."

    Eng 33-0

Never let winning a Test match get in the way of a brew and a slice of cake. Rod Tucker even waits for the clock to tick round to 15:40 before removing the bails. Alastair Cook and Alex Hales march off, the skipper greeted by smiles and backslaps. They will return shortly to win the series.

Sri Lanka go back to pace, Suranga Lakmal greeted by a cut for four by the newest member of the 10,000 Club. The time that Lakmal has taken to get through this set might mean we don't fit anything else in before tea...

  12. Eng 29-0published at 15:35

On the England balcony, Jonny Bairstow has resumed what could be the crossword he was doing during the first innings. Lots of chilly players and staff up there, while Nick Compton looks tense. Maybe two overs to go before the break.

  13. Eng 28-0 (need 51 more to win)published at 15:33

Did I say crawl? Alex Hales has decided he wants to get back down the motorway. A pull off Siriwardana for four, then an ugly hoik for a couple. I'm told that tea can be delayed by 15 minutes, though I don't think that will be enough to get this game done, unless Hales goes into white-ball mode.

"Compton's heart must have sank. He'll know now that Scott Borthwick has scored 150. As soon as it starts getting thrown around the press room at Test matches, you know it's there or thereabouts. Under the sort of pressure Borthwick's been under, he's performed."

  15. Eng 22-0 (target 79)published at 15:30

We now have left-arm spin from both ends, Milinda Siriwardana joining the attack and getting very excited when the ball goes off Cook's thigh pad and into the hands of leg slip. Nothing doing. At the other end, Herath and his box of tricks ensure that this is a crawl, rather than a sprint for England.

    Eng 16-0

Here is that moment when Alastair Cook reached 10,000 Test runs. Huge smile from the skipper, handshake from Alex Hales, a huge blue banner unfurled in Durham. It also confirms that Ben Stokes really was trouserless in those celebrations. Don't believe me? See for yourself...

Simon: Alastair Cook already a legend of England cricket!! Hopefully many more to come.

Alphonse Rawlinson: He has deserved that, through sheer hard work, a remarkable achievement, 10,000 runs! #YesChef, external

Beth Jakubowski: Alastair Cook is the pinnacle of professionalism. If you want a role model in sport Cook is your man. Dedicated and diligent.

I'm seeing pictures of the England balcony at the moment Cook reached 10,000 runs. Ben Stokes - who isn't playing in this match, remember - was on there, not wearing any trousers, sporting only a pair of green boxer shorts. What on earth was he doing? This needs further investigation...

I said that Cook was 12th man to reach 10,000 Test runs. The other 11 - Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardene, Sunil Gavaskar, Jacques Kallis, Allan Border, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Steve Waugh. He celebrates by driving Pradeep for three, then cutting for four.
