    Warwickshire 77-5 v Somerset 295

Warwickshire lose their third wicket of the morning at Edgbaston as Tim Ambrose edges Jim Allenby behind.

Ian Bell, who was off the field with a hamstring twinge yesterday evening comes in at number seven with Varun Chopra holding one end together on 38.

I wonder how many times Bell has batted there before?

  2. 'Northants have perked up'published at 12:08 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Leicestershire 332 v Northants 8-0

BBC Radio Northampton’s Alex Winter at Grace Road:

“Poor with the ball yesterday - leaking 60 extras - some stern words in the dressing has perked up the Northants attack this morning.

“They’ve picked up 5 for 20 in 42 balls to haul back their weak position overnight. Ollie Stone on his comeback finishing with 4 for 56.

“But with runs on the board, Leicestershire won’t mind a bit more for the bowlers. It still looks like a good day for batting - if Northants can get through the new ball.”

Well, well, well, we saw this yesterday when Gloucestershire slumped to 14-4 - Kent lose their second early wicket as Joe Denly is bowled by David Payne.

    WICKET Bell-Drummond (b Payne 0)published at 11:57 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Kent 0-1 v Gloucestershire 337

We saw a flurry of early wickets at Canterbury yesterday morning, and it could be a similar story in the Kent innings as Daniel Bell-Drummond goes without scoring, bowled by David Payne.

Big wicket for Gloucestershire as Bell-Drummond has been in fine form so far this summer.

  7. North v South game an "interesting concept"published at 11:55 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

BBC Sport's Stephan Shemilt on BBC Radio Lancashire:

"It's a concept that's popular in New Zealand, and it goes towards selection. It's the brainchild of Andrew Strauss, and the ECB have obviously seen this and they think that there is maybe too large a jump between the county and the international game.

"Some county players don't get to play higher standards in different conditions, it will test the experience of those players on the fringe - with the top four from the north and south automatically selected and the rest on the 'strategic needs' of the team - and so that's what they are going to go for in the build-up to the 2019 World Cup."

Now here's something which is likely to spark a bit of a debate - the ECB has unveiled a new 'North v South' of England one-day series, featuring players picked by a computer programme.

The three-match series will be played in Abu Dhabi next March and you can read all about it here

So who would be in your North and South sides? Benny Howell was the leading English player in last year's PCA MVP one-day rankings - would you take him? Get involved using #bbccricket.

  9. FIRST INNINGS OVER AT GRACE ROAD & CANTERBURYpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

It's been some comeback by Northants' bowlers at Grace Road - they've dismissed Leicestershire for 332. Olly Stone finishes with 4-56.

Gloucestershire are also all out at Canterbury against Kent for 337. That's some recovery by the visitors, having been 14-4 on Sunday.

  10. wicket

    WICKET Lees (c Foakes b T Curran 16)published at 11:41 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Yorkshire 45-3 v Surrey 330

Yorkshire's top order fails once again as Alex Lees nicks Tom Curran behind for 16.

Something hasn't quite clicked so far this season, but with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root now at the crease the game could very quickly turn back in the hosts' favour.

  11. Joe Root comes to the creasepublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Yorkshire 45-2 v Surrey 330

Well John won't have to wait very long as Gary Ballance becomes Ravi Rampaul's second victim of the day at Headingley, bowled for just eight.

And Root is off the mark third ball with a boundary.

    Sussex 112-1 v Derbyshire 191

Despite having a scare only a few moments ago when he was dropped on 47, Ed Joyce reaches his half-century and Sussex remain in control on day two of their County Championship match against Derbyshire. Three fours for the Irishman in that fifty and Sussex trail by just 79.

  14. It's rainingpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Worcestershire 371-2 v Glamorgan

Hmm, I'm not sure this was in the forecast this morning, but they're off at Cardiff for rain.

Worcestershire pair Brett D'Oliveira (162 not out) and Joe Clarke (123 not out) have continued on their merry way in the half-hour's play that was possible, extending their partnership to 237.

Might have to start getting the record books out soon.

  15. Red Rose returnpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Lancashire 164-1 v Hampshire 109

Look who's back at Old Trafford this morning.

Andrew Flintoff popped along to Lancashire's net session and Tweeted to say he felt like a "competition winner".

I bet there's a few of the Lancashire players who feel like competition winners after the day they had against Hampshire yesterday!

  16. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE ALL OUTpublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Nottinghamshire 354 v Middlesex

The rest of the Notts innings didn't last long at Lord's as Tim Murtagh bowls Jake Ball before Toby Roland-Jones dismisses Harry Gurney in the same fashion for his fifth wicket.

    Roland-Jones' figures, an impressive 5-61.

  17. wicket

WICKET Lyth (lbw b Rampaul 13)published at 11:19 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Yorkshire 27-1 v Surrey 330

Surrey have an early breakthrough at Headingley as Ravi Rampaul traps Adam Lyth lbw for 13.

Gary Ballance, with at least one England Test spot up for grabs, comes to the crease.

  18. Wickets tumbling at Grace Roadpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Leicestershire 314-8 v Northants

Blimey, the Northants bowlers must have slept well - they've just picked up three Leicestershire wickets in eight balls at Grace Road.

Ben Sanderson removes Ben Raine, before Olly Stone dismisses Aadil Ali and Niall O'Brien in the next over.

This is some collapse from Leicestershire, who were 247-2 at one stage yesterday.

  19. wicket

    WICKET Trott (c C Overton b Gregory 14)published at 11:14 British Summer Time 9 May 2016

    Warwickshire 30-3 v Somerset

Warwickshire are wobbling at Edgbaston as Jonathan Trott goes early on, caught by Craig Overton off Lewis Gregory.

Sam Hain comes to the crease ahead of Ian Bell, who was off the field with a hamstring twinge after tea yesterday.

BBC WM's Mike Taylor has more details:

"An important early success for Somerset. With some care they placed Craig Overton a few paces round from the square leg umpire, towards mid-wicket

"Lewis Gregory's shortish ball to Jonathan Trott was seized upon eagerly enough by the former England player, but his pull was miscued precisely to Overton, who flopped forward to hold the catch."

It hasn't exactly been plain-sailing so far this season for Yorkshire as they look to win a third straight County Championship title.

Three draws and a tough day in the field against Surrey yesterday before a late fightback have raised a few questions about whether they will have it as easy as the previous two seasons.

With Notts, Middlesex and Warwickshire all looking strong, who do you think will win the County Championship this season?
