In a match against his brother’s team at Lurgashall yesterday afternoon, our captain J. Baker came in at no.9 and was out lbw first ball. As we were playing with 10, the opposition ‘generously’ said he could bat again as our 11th player, whereupon he was bowled first ball.

"Scott Borthwick should bat at number three in the next Test. He was picked is a spinner in his only Test but has gone back to Durham and become a real high-class batsman. He's played overseas in New Zealand, got a big century for Durham not long ago against a very good Notts attack. Vince needs a few more games, but has missed a great opportunity here."

If, as Michael Vaughan has just implied, people are more keen to watch test matches in London than in the North, perhaps the northern test matches should be scheduled for the height of summer, rather than in May? People will always go to Lords - no need to give them the privileged slots in July and August - and it's no wonder Headingley and Chester-le-Street struggled in the spring.
