Should Mohammad Amir be allowed back?

    BBC Test Match Special

Mike Selvey of the Guardian: "I would welcome Mohammad Amir back, but not the other two. He was a very gullible young man. Other people might disagree. He's served his sentence. I'm proud of cricket that we don't only welcome these people back but put them to good use."

    The wicket-keeping dilemma

    BBC Test Match Special

George Dobell of Cricinfo: "You can't pick Buttler. He hasn't played a first-class game since he was dropped. I'd pick Ben Foakes, he's the most talented keeper in the country. In India, Bairstow could be a disaster."

Mike Selvey of the Guardian: "Bairstow's keeping has got to be an issue. We all tried very hard to mitigate his dropped catch, but that was straight in and out. There's a definite case for moving him up and finding another keeper. I won't say that is Buttler, because I don't think he's a significantly better keeper than Bairstow."

    Woakes or Finn?

    BBC Test Match Special

George Dobell of Cricinfo: "I would still pick Steven Finn ahead of Chris Woakes. Even when he's not bowling great, he still takes wickets and that's kind of the job. But Chris Woakes is a very good cricketer. England need a pack of fast bowlers and it's great that there's another one in there now. It's a good problem to have."

    Is Alex Hales the answer?

    BBC Test Match Special

Paul Newman of the Daily Mail: "The bottom order are still outscoring the top order, which will cost England against better opposition, but it looks like England have found an opener."

    Is Alex Hales the answer?

    BBC Test Match Special

The Guardian's Mike Selvey: "I've been really impressed by Alex Hales. I had doubts based on what I've seen in one-day cricket. When he first came into the Test side, people had entirely the wrong expeectatins of him - he's not our David Warner, he's fairly orthodox. He's learnt judgment outside off stump, he's good off the front foot and stands tall off the back foot. And he's starting to learn a bit of patience. He's done really well."

    The end of Nick Compton?

    BBC Test Match Special

Paul Newman of the Daily Mail: "I felt that they should have taken this series to blood a younger batsman. Compton will be able to look back on some good successes. He's a good player and a nice guy, but it was a mistake to pick him in this series."

    The end of Nick Compton?

    BBC Test Match Special

The Guardian's Mike Selvey: "They just don't base their selections on volume of runs, but Scott Borthwick is making a very strong case. James Vince hasn't yet done anything to persuade me that he's a Test match batsman."

    The end of Nick Compton?

    BBC Test Match Special

Cricinfo's George Dobell: "I guarantee Nick Compton is gone. I'm a huge fan, but he hasn't done himself justice. I don't think there's any chance at all he will be in the side for the Pakistan series."

    Umpiring issues

    BBC Test Match Special

Cricinfo's George Dobell: "I can't believe in televised Test cricket that it is beyond the wit of man for every delivery to be checked for a no-ball."

    Umpiring issues

    BBC Test Match Special

Daily Mail's Paul Newman: "The umpires have been excellent in this series, as demonstrated by Angelo Mathews wasting about 14 reviews."

    Umpiring issues

    BBC Test Match Special

Mike Selvey of the Guardian: "Ian Gould has told me he umpires Championship matches entirely differently to Test matches. They stand further back now because they think one day an umpire is going to get hit with the ball."

Should there be two divisions of Test cricket?

    BBC Test Match Special

The Guardian's Mike Selvey: "I love Test cricket, I think it's the greatest game. We're obsessed with this idea of Test cricket as the pinnacle. It's not the pinnacle: it's a peak, but so is T20 cricket, and so is one-day cricket. So I don't agree that everyone should be aspiring to play Test cricket."

Should there be two divisions of Test cricket?

    BBC Test Match Special

Cricinfo's George Dobell: "I wouldn't have two divisions of Test cricket, I'd have 10. Give any country that wants to play Test cricket a mechanism. If West Indies drop out, let them go - there will be other countries. Look at Afghanistan - they've improved so quickly I wouldn't put anything past them."

    How should Tests be awarded?

    BBC Test Match Special

Paul Newman of the Daily Mail: "I think they are going to abandon the system where grounds bid to host Test matches. That's got to be right, it's crippling for the counties. The risk has to be on the back of the ECB."
