We've seen enough in those three overs and four balls to suggest there's enough going on out there for England to win this match. In fact, you'd struggle to see Sri Lanka surviving anything like 60 overs. But will we get that long? Maybe not...

"It's coming down hard enough to make people who are sitting in the open scurrying for cover."
SL 45-1
These dark clouds are to England are like that mate who's brilliant when he's had one or two beers, but a nightmare after five or six. You want them to a point, but don't let them go too far. England want the assistance of the overcast conditions, but they don't want the clouds to burst. It's pelting down. Kusal Mendis didn't get chance to make it to the middle.

And then...

"Credit to Anderson - he's been bowling awayswingers to the right-hander and he got that come back up the slope."
Silva lbw Anderson 16 (SL 45-1)
That review is as bad as the ones the Stone Roses got for their comeback single. Kaushal Silva has been completely foxed by James Anderson, who served up outswinger, outswinger, then the big in-ducker, which Silva didn't pick. Bat raised, pads in front of all three, ball would have clattered middle and leg. The first of 10?

"The only way it is missing is if it's done too much, which is very unlikely. That's got to be out."
SL 45-0
Out! Just out! Anderson inswinger, no shot from Silva. Looks dead. Don't review it...

"The lights are on and, looking to the west, there are some dark clouds."
Hoop and nip are the twin dangers to the batsmen. Earlier on in this match conditions for batting were a day on the beach. Now they are parallel parking on your driving test. Testing times, the type Dido made a career about singing about...

"He just got enough bat on it to beat the left hand of Alex Hales. Not a chance but just a flicker of hope for Broad."
SL 44-0
Broad has the pavilion behind him. Overhead, grey clouds seep into the white sky like a drop of paint in water. Round the wicket to left-hander Karunaratne. Flashed! Just past the dive of the man at gully. When's this breakthrough going to come? You can feel it.

"That was a brute and there was movement there, which make you think anything is possible in terms of an England victory."
James Anderson in the sort of conditions he would order from Mother Nature. Bad start, a long hop that Silva cuts for four, before Jimmy settles in to those arcing away swingers that hoop down the slope towards the hippos in the slips. Bounce too, rattling Silva on the arm. Perfect time to bowl. You can almost smell wickets in the air.

That batsman on the wine stopper - is it commemorating Cookie's remarkable ramp shot?

Other than green walls and a red lampshade, how else does it look like a cricket pitch? Are there any other example of cricket-inspired interior design?

Thanks, James. 81 overs left in the day, plenty of time for a result. More chance for England than Sri Lanka. Stuart Broad with the ball at a quite empty Lord's, dark enough for the lights to be on. Should nip about. Two slips, gully, short leg. Edge from Kaushal Silva! Just short short of Alastair Cook and first grabber.
Right, time for me to hand over to Stephan Shemilt, who will take you through the afternoon session...
