"We haven't seen many short-pitched deliveries. Because Plunkett is extracting movement he's hitting a length more often than not."

It is binary stuff from Sri Lanka at the moment. All ones and zeros.

Here is how Gunathilaka's innings ended...

  3. SL 51-2 (Woakes 5-0-17-0)published at 10 overs

Steven Finn watches on from the England dressing room. When will he get another chance? Not for a while if Chris Woakes has anything to do with it. Woakes' fifth over is another economical one to end the powerplay. England will be pleased with the first 10.

It is a good track but we've not had much fireworks yet from the batting side. This is probably the best we've had, courtesy of Gunathilaka, who is now back in the tent...

Good wheels from Plunkett. Dinesh Chandimal is beaten first ball with one that nips away from him at pace.

"That was quick, just under 90mph. He's bowling with pace and aggression. It moved off the seam back in. I thought at one stage it might have been high, but Mendis has to go."

Mendis lbw Plunkett 0 (SL 47-2)

Oooo-o-ooooh Liam Plunkett's on fire! The big seamer gets the ball to nip back from just short of a length and it does for Mendis, who is trapped bang in front. That. Is. Out.

Mendis glances at Perera, hoping for some salvation via a review, but gets a shaking head in return. It would have been umpire's call.

"I saw Oxenford use his shield in the IPL. There were some jokes, but I think it was fair enough, especially with Chris Gayle at the other end. You don't want to be standing in his way."

  9. SL 42-1published at 8 overs

Looks like the light rain has done one. A bunch of fellas dressed as bananas look happy to leave their hoods down as they bring beer back to their seats. More good work from Woakes. Just a cheeky single and a wide added to the tourist's tally.

    Chris Manning: The Platter.

Never mind protecting himself, Oxenford could do some serious damage with that arm contraption. If he's not careful he could end up clobbering a bowler when signalling an extra. Kusal Mendis is the new batsman and he is kept on strike with three dot balls to end Plunkett's first over.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It was good areas from Plunkett, on a length outside off stump, enticing the drive. He was trying to hit it over the top. If the batsman want to play that shot at those balls, there's a risk of an edge and that's what he got."

    Gunathilaka c Buttler b Plunkett 22 (SL 39-1)

Liam Plunkett's first ball is a shocker - a full-bunger that Perera smashes through the off side for four. His third is miles better - outside off, just short of a length, and has Gunathilaka swinging wildly and edging to Jos Buttler. It was a shot that deserved a dismissal. England are up and running.

We have ground staff poised and jackets going on. It can mean only one thing - it's spitting, it's spitting! Meanwhile, Woakes proves more effective than Willey. Just three runs off the over.

"It just shows that this pitch has really got some runs in it. If you're not quite there on length or line, the batsman can just go play through with the shot."

    Andy Greenwood: The Deflectorizer.

Steve Briddon: Umpires attachment is a Starship Enterprise with working phasors. Next time there's a stray foot on the wicket "bazaam!"

Darren Keighley: @bbctms, external is it for hitting people who ask for stupid reviews?

  19. SL 31-0 (Perera 11, Gunathilaka 20)published at 5 overs

With his shield, Oxenford has taken some of the precision out of signalling for six. He has two chances to demonstrate this with two lofted shots down the ground by Gunathilaka. He barely even struck the second - checking his shot and taking one hand off the bat as the ball soars skywards and then over the rope.
