  1. SL 58-2 (Mendis 38, Chandimal 8)published at 16 overs

Mendis decides a change of bat is needed to inject some impetus but his first delivery with the new blade is a good one from Jordan and he can only prod it conservatively back.

"Already you can see this pitch is so slow. The Sri Lankans will be waiting for the pull shot."

  4. SL 55-2 (run-rate 3.66)published at 15 overs

Talking of spin, Adil Rashid is introduced with his whirly leg-spinning action. Not much early threat from the Yorkshireman and Mendis latches on to a short one, pulling it through wide mid-on for a much-needed boundary.

  5. Wicketless England spinners at Bristolpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 26 June 2016

England, who have played ODIs semi-regularly at Bristol since 2001, have often fielded all-seam attacks there, with part-time spinners sending down some overs. Apart from Graeme Swann's two wickets, here are the wicketless twirlers:

    • 2010: Michael Yardy (10-0-39-0)
    • 2005: Michael Vaughan (6-0-33-0), Vikram Solanki (2-0-14-0)
    • 2004: Michael Vaughan (5-0-29-0)
    • 2001: Robert Croft (7-0-46-0)

  6. SL 47-2 (Mendis 31, Chandimal 4)published at 14 overs

Aerial again from Mendis, he doesn't move his feet much but he likes a free flowing swish of the bat. He has not timed one well for a while, though he has all three of the boundaries scored. Just the single to the mid-wicket boundary off Jordan.

"England have conceded three fours in their first 13 overs. That is the second fewest fours they have conceded in an ODI for the first 13 overs."

  8. SL 44-2 (Mendis 30, Chandimal 3)published at 13 overs

Mendis, showing admirable attacking intent despite the slow start by his team, drives Plunkett, takes one hand off the bat but still collects two and moves into the 30s.

Here's the moment when Kusal Mendis cut David Willey for four.

  10. SL 40-2 (Mendis 27, Chandimal 2)published at 12 overs

The recalled Chris Jordan into the attack, and he has a great record against Angelo Mathews, so I am hoping he will be in the attack when the skipper comes to the crease so I can bring it to you. Only two singles conceded in the Sussex bowler's opening over.

  12. SL 38-2 (Mendis 26, Chandimal 1)published at 11 overs

Mendis pulls Plunkett out towards mid-wicket, he doesn't get it flush out of the middle but it beats Jonny Bairstow, who crashes into the padded rope.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It's one of those distinctive type pf pitches for this ground. You either get the green seamers or you've got the straw-coloured ones that are a bit tricky to bat on."

  14. SL 34-2 (Mendis 22, Chandimal 1)published at 10 overs

The end of the powerplay and surely Sri Lanka would have hoped for a higher run-rate than 3.40. Just the two singles in the over from Woakes. The Bristol ground is dominated at one end by flats and they feature balconies offering some fabulous views of the action. A few bottles in evidence already. Is the sun over the yardarm yet? Not that we have any sun currently.

"Graeme Swann is the only England spin bowler to have taken an ODI wicket in Bristol - he got Chris Gayle in 2009 and Daniel Vettori in 2008."

  16. SL 32-2 (Mendis 21, Chandimal 0)published at 9 overs

Dinesh Chandmal, who is under something of a fitness cloud that may prevent him from keeping wicket later, is the new batsman. He is under some Bristol cloud too, good conditions for swing bowling.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It's almost a shame he's top edged this. Had he hit it off the middle of the bat, it would have been a glorious shot for six."

  18. wicket

    Perera c Buttler b Plunkett 9 (SL 32-2)published at 8.2 overs

Six-hitter Liam Plunkett into the attack and his pace and bounce bring him a wicket second ball, Perera's yahoo flying off the top edge and Jos Buttler barely having to move behind the stumps to collect the steepling catch. A 50th ODI scalp for Plunkett in his 37th match.

  19. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 8 overs

    SL 31-1 (Perera 9, Mendis 20)

The dropped catch graphic may be harsh but this is international level etc. Woakes had barely a milli-second to react (0.449 seconds our TV friends then tell us) as Perera thumped it back towards his head at an alarming rate of knots. He managed to get both hands on it but the pace forces the ball through his grasp.
