  • England lead five-match series 1-0

  1. SL 157-3 (Chandimal 54, Mathews 36)published at 34 overs

England need to break this partnership sooner rather than later - Willey is replaced by new-ball partner Chris Woakes, Chandimal pushes one down the hill towards fine leg but a good tumbling stop by Adil Rashid, just before he goes crashing into the boundary, restricts them to two. But after a single takes him to 54, Woakes keeps Mathews bottled up for the rest of the over.

Chandimal, dodgy hamstring or not, reaches his 17th ODI fifty from 65 balls, with a confident nudge off Jordan. These two are running between the wickets increasingly well.

So, Sri Lanka have a solid base - when do you "go big" in an ODI these days? They have a few more batsmen to come - notably Upul Tharanga, and the big-hitting Seekkuge Prasanna.

"I think Eoin Morgan might be contemplating tossing the ball to Root to give himself some options. He might need a bit of leeway. He might want to use Rashid more as an attacking option to new batsmen."

  5. SL 148-3 (Chandimal 49, Mathews 32)published at 32 overs

Captain Morgan shuffles his field, but Mathews is still confidently clubbing Willey down the ground. Chandimal is one away from his half-century - he has 49 from 64 balls, Mathews' 32 have come at a more rapid rate from 35 deliveries.

"Mathews is a terrific player but he has played the old solider and hasn't been able to let loose so far, that's when he is really dangerous."

  7. SL 146-3published at 31 overs

After bowling eight overs off the reel, Rashid is removed and Chris Jordan returns - two singles and a wide are yielded by the Sussex man.

  8. Sri Lanka's walking wounded increasepublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 26 June 2016

Sri Lanka's injury worries appear to be increasing, as the team management say Farveez Maharoof, external is nursing a fractured finger on his left hand, but will continue playing.

Good thing he's a right-hander, we suppose. Also, a chance for him to maybe emulate the late Malcolm Marshall's heroics from 1984?

If you're just joining us, the news before the start of play was that Lahiru Thirimanne, who's not played in this ODI series, is returning home - with Niroshan Dickwella, one of the drinks-carriers during the Test series, replacing him.

The current men at the wicket - captain Angelo Matthews and vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal - both have hamstring trouble but are also carrying on.

  9. SL 143-3 (Chandimal 47, Mathews 30)published at 30 overs

Willey, kicking up his heels, is milked for ones and twos by Chandimal and Mathews, with consummate ease. Although chilly English conditions will be alien to them, they've played nearly 300 ODIs between them. The 50 stand arrives from 49 balls as Chandimal nudges a four off his legs.

"This is a slow pitch and a genuine edge didn't carry. Joe Root should have stopped it at slip but it had a lot of pace on it and it went away for four."

    SL 134-3

Edged by Mathews... but it doesn't quite carry to Root at slip and bounces awkwardly away for four. Still no luck for Rashid, and this pair have now added 47 in under eight overs.

Still very cloudy in Bristol, with rumours of rain circa 16:00 BST. Keep those Duckworth-Lewis sheets on standby.

  14. SL 124-3 (Chandimal 36, Mathews 23)published at 28 overs

Plunkett takes a break as left-arm seamer David Willey returns for a second spell. No fireworks this over as the tourists plod along. But it won't dampen the enthusiasm of a bunch of hardy Sri Lanka supporters, who are nearly all dressed in their heroes' "smart blue uniforms" and clapping every run.

Here's the end of Kusal Mendis' entertaining knock, caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Alex Hales.

  16. SL 121-3 (Rashid 7-0-40-0)published at 27 overs

Sri Lanka have a few walking wounded in this side, and Dinesh Chandimal's dodgy hamstring is tested to the full as he has to sprint back for a second run. But there's no sign of any problems for Chandimal as he stretches again to hoick Rashid for a first-bounce four through mid-wicket.

Rashid is through seven overs, will he join that illustrious list we posted earlier of wicketless England ODI spinners at Bristol?

Thanks, Jamie - there's no chance to catch my breath as Mathews skips down the track to Plunkett and lifts him over long-on for six, rather denting the Middlesbrough man's previously economical figures. Some busy work brings Sri Lanka some ones and twos.
