"Gunathilaka doesn't look like an international bowler in any way. He is sort of a village-green spinner."
Danushka Gunathilaka is the kind of bowler that gives international hope to all of us. He is at the buffet end of the market. But as we all know, it is exactly the kind of enticing bowling that ends up getting you out. Vince and Root ensure he gets what he deserves, though, taking him for 10 with the former sweeping the last ball for four. This is already looking ominous for Sri Lanka.

I reckon Bruce Oxenford uses his armguard to fight crime at night like Bruce Wayne.
Finn, Nottingham
By day he is a mild-mannered cricket official, but at night he becomes Armguardman, the scourge of criminals with only a reasonable throwing arm.

"It's a gorgeous shot, hit on the up drive with beautiful timing. It was maybe a half-chance as the bowler followed through. It would have been an incredible catch if he had held on to it. But the timing from Joe Root..."
When Root is in form he times the ball like few in world cricket. It bodes well that he offers a flat bat to send the ball flying down the ground for four. These two have ensured that Roy's dismissal has not halted England's momentum.

"Look at this for a good-looking batsman. Oh my word, James Vince. He's less of Michael Vaughan, more of a Mark Waugh."
From the sublime to the ridiculous. That's a bit embarrassing for Perera. Vince pushes the ball off the back foot through extra cover. It should be stopped by the fielder but he dives a second early and is too short of the ball to push it back, instead flapping ineffectively as it touches the rope.

"Roy's 316 put him fifth on the list of England openers in a bilateral series. If he had scored three more he would have been in the top three. Top of the list is Alex Hales."
Joe Root is the new man. He doesn't have anything to prove but he could do with some runs after falling short of his ludicrously high standards this series.
He starts in the best way possible, leaning into a classic cover drive to send his first ball flying through cover for four.

"Down Roy came and I don't know where he was aiming. It was a very good catch as there's a stiff breeze out there. Foolishly Roy tried hitting it into the breeze."
Roy c Perera b Lakmal 34 (Eng 67-1)
England lose their first wicket as Roy's series with the bat comes to a disappointing end. He tries a big shot into the wind off Lakmal but doesn't quite connect and the ball drops for the diving Kusal Perera to catch at deep mid-wicket.

"Sri Lanka desperately need a wicket, otherwise they will be under the pump. They might try a bit of spin, but it looks a seamer's wicket."
Ooh, just a sign that this wicket has a little trick up the sleeve. Pradeep lands one just short of a length and it spits up at Roy, hitting him on the glove and forcing him to whip his hand away. Vince is then cut in two with a ripper that nips back and just over the stumps.
That's a warning for this pair not to get complacent.

"They'll be very happy with this, Roy and Vince. With the running, there's been one aberration. Other than that, they seem to have built up a good understanding."
There is a full medieval kingdom of characters sat in one of the stands at Cardiff. A king, a few knights, some peasants and a wench. With a beard.
Lakmal opts to dig a few in short but both Vince and Roy fail to properly connect and only get a couple of singles. The latter then strides down to whip-steer one on the floor to within a yard of the rope to pick up three. The shot of a man in prime form.

"Everyone's quite intrigued to see, if England play well, how many they can get. Roy, if he can stay there, is in vintage form. Root is hungry for runs, but hasn't got a lot."
Don't bowl that filth at me! Jason Roy flicks a Bandara ball off his legs for four and then hammers a lofted drive down the ground for another boundary. The debutant is struggling for consistent line and length. Roy has now reached 300 runs for the series. Take a bow, son.

"The grass has given the wicket a bit of pace, which adds to a good game."
