At school, we faced a much richer, posher and generally better school at cricket. They scored 267-1 from their 20 overs. Our response? 6 all out. Forever my legacy as school captain.

Bandara, whose name always reminds me of a local train station in Mumbai, has been expensive so far on debut but he pulls a bit of credit back into his account, giving away just five. Root in fact had a charge down as well, which he missed completely.

Gunathilaka, he of the part-time-but-not-too-shabby fame, back for another spell. Keeps it tight, though England do sneak in a couple.

Bairstow charges down the ground for a boundary off Prasanna, which sullies what would have been a tidy over from the spinner.

"The spinner wants to you to play straight and bring in the outside edge. So why not sweep it. It is a good shot. From Sri Lanka's point of view it might be good to get a slip in there from somewhere."

  8. Eng 160-3 (Root 41, Bairstow 9)published at 29 overs

Root brought out a couple of reverse sweeps to Mendis. One of those brought a boundary as well. Both batsmen content with picking off the runs rather than going on the rampage.

    Here's Eoin Morgan's departure again...

  10. Eng 152-3published at 28 overs

A tight over from Prasanna, who's gone through seven of his now. Just three coming from the set. England will head to the 30-over mark happy with the effort, so will Sri Lanka throw a spanner in those works?

Having won our opening 10 or so games in a corporate last man stands cricket league, some ex-Pakistani professionals decided to put us in our place. Having put on 304 in 20 (5-ball) overs, they bowled us out for 11.

Kusal Mendis into his first over. Doesn't really bowl much, but that could count for little as we've seen already with Gunathilaka earlier today. England work the gaps well though and sneak a couple of twos.

  13. Eng 144-3 (Root 32, Bairstow 2)published at 26 overs

A bit of a scare then for England in that over, as the TV umpire confirmed Bairstow was well home. The visitors have had their chances, and will hope another one does not fall by the wayside.

Thanks Phil. Well what a start for me, and it nearly was an end for Jonny Bairstow, who had to dive well to avoid being run out at the non-striker's end.

Jonny Bairstow joins his Yorkshire colleague Root at the crease. He is kept at the striker's end by Gunathilaka.

That is all from me for now. Here is Bibhash Dash.

Chris Mitchell: Morgan is turning into an outstanding ODI captain but his batting is becoming a liability. He needs a score and soon.

"The shot was on. There was a great big gap over extra cover. It was a wrist-clip shot, and the fielder made fantastic ground. Morgan will be kicking himself as he may have fancied himself a big score today."

    Morgan c Mendis b Gunathilaka 20 (Eng 137-3)

Gunathilaka is doing a fine job for his side here. He claims the England skipper with a seemingly harmless looping ball that Morgan lofts into what he presumably thought was space but is instead quickly filled by the diving Kusal Mendis, who takes the catch.
