"It’s a big day for Vince, as he just needs to do something. They don’t worry about the wicket these days. They just smash it about."

"Normally it’s a big ground. But they’ve brought the boundaries in today. And it looks like a postage stamp."

One thing to point out today - the boundary rope has been brought in a fair way on this Cardiff pitch. As long as the wicket doesn't have any real demons in it, we could potentially see a big score or two.

I've played a couple of times on a ground in Tong, West Yorkshire, by the Greyhound pub, with the smallest boundaries you've ever seen. It was like playing on the felt pitch from Test Match.

Alex Hales won't be playing in Cardiff today but he is a wanted man.

Division Two side Essex have requested to speak to the 27-year-old Nottinghamshire and England opener, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Hales is England's first-choice opener across all three formats after making his Test debut in December 2015.

Should Hales join Essex it would mean he joins up with England Test opening partner and captain Alastair Cook.

The start has been delayed by 10 minutes while the groundstaff clear away the water left by that brief shower. As long as the rain stays away, we'll get under way at 10:40 BST.

England captain Eoin Morgan: "I would have bowled first because of the green on the wicket.

"It's a really important game for us. When we've gone ahead the series in the past we've almost let our foot off the accelerator."

  12. Captain's viewpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 2 July 2016

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews: "We'll have a bowl first with the weather around, and the wicket is slightly greener than the last one.

"We batted well in the last game, just our bowling didn't happen. Hopefully we will bat well second.

"We go in with one change, with Chaminda Bandara coming in for Farveez Maharoof."

  13. Team newspublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 2 July 2016

Two changes for England. James Vince is in for Alex Hales at the top of the order. He has a "back niggle", apparently. Chris Jordan comes in to the bowling attack, replacing Moeen Ali.

Chaminda Bandara replaces Farveez Maharoof in a single bowling change for Sri Lanka.

If England are going to prove themselves as the best, they are going to do it the hard (and very busy way). In plans announced yesterday, their 2017 home schedule will span 149 days and features their earliest start and latest finish to a summer.

The first games of the domestic season will be against Ireland, the first time the teams have met in England.

Three more one-day internationals with South Africa follow before the Champions Trophy from 1-18 June.

After three Twenty20 games, Test matches will not start until 6 July, with seven matches in 67 days against South Africa and West Indies.

OK, so this game may be a dead rubber, with England currently holding an unassailable 2-0 lead, but that doesn't mean the game is without interest.

After all, this England team are on a mission to become the best in the world - a year ago, such a notion would have been as laughable as the England football team declaring a similar idea today.

Amazingly, the cricket side are not that far off. In the 12 months, their batsmen have scored runs at a quicker rate, made more hundreds, and hit more fours and sixes than the batsmen from any other country.

Now, they need to add that ruthless touch to their game. Like the great Australian ODI teams of recent eras. No mercy.

I think it's fair to say the Welsh don't always get behind England's sporting teams (see below) but cricket, being the wonderful, warm-spirited game that it is, unites nations and today in Cardiff we have an English-Welsh alliance. Just take it easy with that overhead clap Iceland celebration, OK lads?

I suspect there might be a few sore heads in the stands at the cricket today, you know, what with one of their biggest ever sporting results happening last night.

What they probably need is a nice, quiet game in Cardiff to ease them back in. Unfortunately, England don't really do quiet cricket any more.
