"These five ODIs, quite close together, where you are finishing one and then on to the next. I know it is not massive distances but it is still wearying. I'm not trying to be too sympathetic but you can underestimate the fatigue."

    Plunkett 4-0-15-1

England have been sharp in the field, none more so than Jonny Bairstow to run out the dangerous Mendis for 22. Plunkett, too, has been impressive with the ball... until he drops short and Sri Lanka skipper Mathews pulls in controlled fashion for four well in front of square. The required run-rate is approaching 7.5 an over now.

"Nicely bowled. Rashid does have a nice one out of the front hand, like a top spinner."

  4. SL 88-3 (target 325)published at 18 overs

The first sight of the Rashid googly - and a beauty it is too. Drawing new batsman Angelo Mathews forward and beating the inside edge. "Howizeee?!" Bowler, wicketkeeper and slip go up in union. Umpire Paul Reiffel shakes his head. Inscrutable behind those shades.

I stand corrected. Hats off to the ump, although it was one of those where if he'd given it not out in the first instance, it would have stayed that way on review. We hear that that law is soon to be changed - or at least the margin of error will be relaxed.

"It was a good decision by Michael Gough. The replay showed it was just clipping the stump."

Gunathilaka lbw Plunkett 48 (SL 83-3)

That's the danger of using your review up early... Plunkett strikes for England - Gunathilaka adjudged lbw to one angled in from round the wicket. My initial thought was that might have been sliding down leg, but umpire Michael Gough doesn't think so and the finger goes up. Gunathalika has a chat with Chandimal - they've clearly forgotten Sri Lanka don't have any reviews left - before trudging off.

An experiment to merge Joe Root and Jos Buttler into some sort of unstoppable batting machine, perhaps? Send your suggestions to #bbccricket, email tms@bbc.co.uk or text 81111.

Yes. Not even close to hitting leg stump. As you were. Both sides have now lost their review. Maybe England wanted to even it up - that was a waste.

    Gunathilaka 48 (SL 82-2)

A rare full one from Rashid. Gunathilaka is beaten by turn but surely that's going down the leg side. Surely. The umpire thinks so. Not out.

  12. SL 82-2published at 15.5 overs

Time for some spin. Adil Rashid in to the attack. Too short from the leggie - and too leg side from the leggie. Gunathalika pulls for four. Easy as you like.

Hugh Grant: Jordan is so wasteful - two wides in one over! Not up to the job in my humble opinion.

  14. SL 74-2 (target 325)published at 15 overs

    Jordan 3-0-20-0

You suspect much of the responsibility for Sri Lanka's chase rests on the shoulders of Gunathilaka. He has 41 off 38 balls now. Jordan not at his best - he's spraying it a little - but almost sees Gunathilaka's mistimed cut find deep point off the last ball of an over costing eight runs.

  15. SL 66-2 (target 325)published at 14 overs

Almost another mix-up. "Yes, no, wait, sorry!" Gunathilaka and new man Dinesh Chandimal survive to have a chat at the end of the over. Sri Lanka need to regroup.

"It is a good dive but also a nice take from Buttler, who took it in front of the stumps and gave them a good clattering."

Mendis run out 22 (SL 66-2)

Don't take on Jonny Bairstow's arm! Mendis tries to sneak a second round to the Ginger One in the deep on the leg side, but even a dive can't save him as Buttler collects an arrow-like throw and takes the bails off. It's only a matter of inches but England don't care.

"Gunathilaka has scored 30 and taken three wickets. Only the third Sri Lankan player to do that in an ODI against England."

  19. SL 63-1 (target 325)published at 13 overs

Never mind the kitchen sink - Gunathilaka has thrown the cistern, bath and shower cubicle at one that Jordan pushes wide of him. Four booming runs through cover. I think the mascots who are having a game of chase in the stands might have missed that stroke. Shame. Ten off the over, including two wides.

  20. SL 53-1published at 12 overs

    Gunathilaka 27, Mendis 18

A double change of bowling for England. Liam Plunkett on for Willey - one beard for another. Mendis, plasters holding bits of his helmet in place, is like a cricketing version of Jack Duckworth from Coronation Street. He gets off strike to allow Gunathilaka to guide a yorker to fine third man for four. That was either superbly well played or very lucky. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
