Thanks Bibhash. David Willey with the second over. A good start too, with the exception of one that's a touch short and Kusal Perera rocks back to pull for a couple. A well-timed cut off the last ball stings the hands of backward point.

If you fancy some cricket coverage of an Essex nature, why not tune in to BBC Essex's 'Around the Wicket' programme? It is live now and can be found by clicking here.

On today’s show Paul Hawkins is joined by first-class umpire Neil Bainton, Essex fast bowler Jamie Porter, England women star Tammy Beaumont and the regular cricket dingbats feature.

  4. SL 1-0 (target 325)published at 1 overs

Danushka Gunathilaka makes a few strong attempts at getting the ball past the circle but he can't get off the mark to Chris Woakes. Could be a very interesting evening if the opener gets going.

And speaking of interesting evenings, this is my chance to hand you over to Justin Goulding.

The start of the run chase has apparently run a couple of minutes late.

Never mind, we're about to get under way.

And as we look ahead to the run chase (just a few minutes away), marvel at this effort from Jos Buttler.

Speaking of ODI cricket, if you fancied a look back at some of the moments from England's batting, fear not. Let's start you off with a Joe Root reverse sweep for four. Mind you, he seemed to struggle with that shot later in his innings.

Cricket writer Peter Miller on BBC Test Match Special: "There are always the two ODIs that Nasser Hussain tells me about. One was the final against India in 2002 at Lord's and the other was the Port Elizabeth one against Australia in 2003."

Mally Graveson: I'd love to see Plunkett open the innings one day! Could you imagine the carnage? Whack!!

Sri Lanka set a relatively hefty target of 325. I say relatively because in these days 300 is almost par and the Chris Gayles and AB de Villiers of this world are probably looking at this score thinking, 'yeah, well, I got three of those.'

Anyway, England will be very pleased with themselves. Joe Root may be a bit miffed missing a century, but well played Jos Buttler with an excellent half-century that was key to England pushing the pace.

"England will think they have held the reins back a bit here. It just shows the totals you can score these days. It is not a great pitch but they still have 324. They will be delighted. A couple of the guys could have gone on after 20s and 30s. But what a display from Jos Buttler."

Plunkett run out Pradeep 9 (Eng 324-7)

Well, he tried. One final flurry beckoned for Plunkett but another slower ball came from Pradeep. Plunkett could only vaguely defend and set off for the run, and Pradeep emphatically struck down the stumps. End of.

Plunkett making merry again. No fear in that huge heave over mid-wicket for four.

  15. Eng 320-6published at 49.4 overs

Woakes dabs it down to long-on for a single.

  16. Eng 319-6published at 49.3 overs

Plunkett tries a few steps down the track but Pradeep is aware and knocks it shorter. One run.

  17. Eng 318-6published at 49.2 overs

Plunkett, no mug with the bat of course, hooks one for four wide of fine-leg first ball. Welcome!

"Well played Joe Root. He hasn't been in the runs but he has done his job. He ticked the innings along. But well bowled Pradeep. It was a good slower ball."

    Root b Pradeep 93 (Eng 314-6)

Slower ball from Pradeep and Root gets his stumps knocked over when trying to charge down the track. Misses out on a century, though in fairness he did struggle a bit to unleash the attacking shots he normally can.

  20. Eng 314-5published at 49 overs

Woakes joins the party now, taking a four and a six off that Lakmal over, the latter a very fine flicked shot over the ropes.
