"Hands like feet, they call it. That was pretty simple. It was a big top-edged and went up far - and there is a bit of breeze - but he should have taken it."

A gentleman tweeted us a short while ago to sing a popular hymn about Buttler being metaphorically aflame with his batting heroics. Sadly, we shall not see the Lancashire man fully live up to that. Root, meanwhile, finally gets his reverse-sweep radar right, getting down low and one off Bandara. It also brings up England's 300.

  3. dropped catch

Root dropped on 90published at 14:22 British Summer Time 2 July 2016

Root living dangerously as he lofts one high in the air, but Lakmal, who seemingly had all the time in the world to run in, drops it at mid-wicket. It literally popped in and out. No other word for it but embarrassing.

"It was round the wicket and aimed in at leg stump. Buttler cleared his leg and it looked to be a slight slower ball the way the batsman reached for it. Buttler is hitting it all over the park so it takes a ball of high quality to get him out."

    Buttler b Bandara 70 (Eng 291-5)

Oh no! Buttler's gone. Tried to make room to swing it over the off side but Bandara's yorker does the damage.

  6. Eng 291-4published at 47 overs

Buttler's going to overtake Root at this rate. Nuwan Pradeep cannot get his length right at all, and Buttler smacks successive boundaries - both with considerable boom to them. Buttler moves to 70.

If you want to marvel at how quickly and how well Buttler's dealt with his innings, these three shots pretty much sum it up.

  8. Eng 277-4 (Root 83, Buttler 59)published at 46 overs

I do like even numbers, Jonathan. Very satisfying they are. Maybe I'm a bit odd like that...

Meanwhile, Buttler pulls a middle-stump delivery towards fine leg for four. Had to step out to about sixth stump on the off side but, hey, they all count. Root finally finds his mojo and cracks a full toss over cover for four. Bandara unable to find any rhythm whatsoever.

Jonathan Everett: Jos Buttler deciding he doesn't like odd numbers. Only hitting 2's, 4's and 6's.

  10. Eng 266-4published at 45 overs

Root tries to free his arms a la Buttler but can't quite get the pace from the ball he desires. Nevertheless, England add seven to the total. Last five overs, and it hopefully will get tastier.

"Anything is possible with Jos Buttler at the crease and with a short, straight boundary. Root will look to put the pedal down now as well."

  12. Eng 259-4published at 44 overs

Sri Lanka clutch at straws with a run out call that wasn't even close. Buttler looking strong with his bottom hand though and with his fifty out of the way, anything is possible now.

"On most grounds that could have been a danger for Buttler, but he is playing then conditions perfectly. It drifted slightly, like a two-iron round the corner on a dog-leg."

  14. 50 runs

50 for Buttlerpublished at 43.5 overs

Bang! Six for Buttler over long-off. Much like his earlier boundaries, he smokes this one off Lakmal to bring up the team 250. And he then sneaks another double to get to his fifty. Just 35 balls taken.

  15. Eng 245-5 (Root 71, Buttler 39)published at 43 overs

Well, even the slowest of pitches are no good (for the bowlers, that is) when a man like Buttler can scoop you. Pradeep's shorter delivery is lofted over the keeper for four, and Buttler then drives through the point area for back-to-back boundaries. Root tries three carbon-copy reverse sweeps and misses all of them. Clearly his double-handed backhand needs work (Andy Murray, over to you).

Will Relf: We have so much batting still to come we might as well go for broke in these last 10 overs. Try and get near 400!

  17. Eng 236-4published at 42 overs

Buttler absolutely smokes one through the covers for four off Lakmal. He uses the bottom hand really well there. Earlier in the over, Root tried a charge-down but completely missed the ball. Some signs of a breakout maybe?

"Root has just not found a rhythm so far. Roy and Vince were timing every shot but all the other batsmen have struggled. They can't go through the gears and kick on. Maybe it is the pitch getting older and losing some pace."

  19. Eng 230-4 (Root 70, Buttler 25)published at 41 overs

Just the review for Root to negotiate in the last over. Have to say I thought England would take a bit of a risky approach into this phase, but so far it has not materialised.

"That didn't look out from the word go. Chandimal needs standing up and whipping in the changing room. That is an awful call. As a wicketkeeper you have an idea if it is going to hit or not and that was missing by about six inches."
