There's a storm brewing in Sri Lanka, where the touring Australians are currently hiring home hero Muttiah Muralitharan as a consultant.

Muralitharan has faced strong criticism in Sri Lanka after he accepted the post, with the President of Sri Lanka cricket, Thilanga Sumathipala, saying he should have put the interest of Sri Lanka first before Australia.

"If I was invited by Sri Lanka before Australia approached me for the current series I would have accepted it," Murali said. "Doing something for my country would have given me greater pride."

But there were some painful moments for England. First, Gary Ballance took one for the team at short-leg...

...but, more worryingly, Ben Stokes left the field with a calf injury that will prevent him from taking any further part in the day's play.

Younus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq offered some resistance, making 28 and 35 respectively.

Azhar Ali was Anderson's second victim....

Although Mohammad Hafeez offered some resistance...

...he eventually fell for 42 to Moeen Ali.

Just joining us? Here's what you've missed in the Pakistan innings. Chasing a notional 565 to win - or, more likely, to bat out more than five sessions to draw - the tourists lost Shan Masood to James Anderson. Again.

Andrew Carter: Pakistan could have a third innings and they'd still lose this match.

England are proving the point to all of us that they could have bowled Pakistan out yesterday. They're going to win comfortably and they're going to win the next two Tests. Once they have got their heads down they've outplayed Pakistan.

What's the film, Dean? All of the BBC Sport team are happy to come and join you in Cannes for the red carpet premiere.

England head off for tea needing just five more wickets to level the series.

Chris Woakes looks frustrated as Asad Shafiq hits him for back-to-back boundaries - one through point and another edged through the slip cordon.

By the way, of the players to have scored more than 1200 Test runs for Pakistan, only Boom Boom himself has a higher batting strike-rate (87) than Sarfraz (75).

He's not here for a long time. Just a good time.

I'm in the middle of a Speed Awareness course (38mph in a 30, hands up). No phones allowed so am hurriedly checking at break time. Moeen to bag a five-for.

Sarfraz is off the mark with a gorgeous cover drive for four. He's such a punchy player at number seven. I'm tempted to say he's Matt Prior-like, but I don't think his defensive technique is as good.

Anderson shows Sarfraz up with a couple of perfect outswingers which have the batsman groping at fresh air.

It was a thoughtful ball. It wasn't particularly quick but give Woakes credit - he tried it. The batsman saw it all the way and jabbed down on it when he didn't need to. That came from nothing.

Sarfraz Ahmed's first delivery is on a good length, it jags back, hits the pads and there's a big appeal. Not out.

    Sarfraz ain't a man for a crisis.

Pakistan can't bat. Mentally, the're shot. If England had shoved Pakistan in again, it would have all been over yesterday.

Given the importance of winning the toss on good wickets, is there a case for captains tossing up once at the start of a Test series and thereafter the choice to bat or bowl alternating between the teams?

    Misbah 31, Shafiq 25

What is it about short batsmen? They tend to be marvellous players, don't they?

I'm thinking Sachin, Lara, James Taylor, now Asad Shafiq.

Is it because they can read length better than most? James Anderson and his slip cordon have their hands on their heads when one keeps low. Not a problem for Shafiq though, who kills it dead in its tracks like a top footballer trapping a raking pass.
