One last flurry for the day from England I think. Joe Root, the boy wonder - if you ignore his dropped catch earlier today - comes in for a few tweakers from over the wicket. He nearly pulls off a wonder in the fourth delivery, a lovely little arm ball that turns away from the right-handed Younus. A bit closer and it could have nicked the off stump.

That statement of Graeme Swann eating his hat is looking very likely - probably by about tea time tomorrow. Although I did think he was right - I didn't see how Pakistan could given how they played at Old Trafford.

Finn's signing autographs by the boundary. Shame about the kid posing for a selfie only to find his celebrity walking away to prepare for the delivery. Woakes now into the attack, and he keeps it on a shorter length. Younus defends, that jump helping him to get on top. The final ball is a good one from Woakes, moves away at the last second.

Cook's responsibility is to England not to players. Just as Roy Hodgson was loyal to players in the qualifiers, it did not serve the best purpose of the team.

Broad continues from over the wicket. A patch of sawdust on the bowler's front crease makes the pitch look like it's wearing a bandaid. Azhar once again gets low enough to drive a full delivery for four through the cover region. Pierced two fielders that one to the ropes. Shot.

Again, Younus is the jumping Jack. He's all over the place.

Sometimes a boon, sometimes a bane. Younus' shuffling nearly gets him in trouble as Anderson gets one to move away a bit and it catches the edge of the bat. Younus was dancing across and jumped a bit as he half-defended it. Sadly for England, it fell well short of Alastair Cook at first slip. A maiden as well.

England miss Ben Stokes hugely - he's an in-your-face player. It's almost like they've lost a wheel off the car and they can't move in the same direction or at the same speed. On a day like this it's been crying out for someone to do something different - and he does that.

We're inside the final 50 of Pakistan's deficit, and Azhar and Younus are continuing to provide solid defence to the relatively new ball. Broad comes in from over the wicket and a slightly wide angle, there's a bit swing. Azhar takes a step out and brings the bat down. For the purists, this is a good contest, no?

Loyalty is a good thing to have as a captain, but sometimes you've got to bowl your best bowlers. You can see Broad has been struggling, while Woakes has been England's best bowler in recent Test matches.

It's a shame we are not far from stumps, as I'd have liked to see more of an angry James Anderson bowling against these two batsmen with the new ball today. A maiden this time around. Plenty of cheers for the Pakistan duo, as a few young autograph hunters in Pakistan shirts light up when the cameras pick them out.

This is where Younus' closed-faced bat position will come in handy maybe. Broad is getting the ball to swing in to the right handers. He's got three slips and is pitching it just outside off. Younus has to get on top of it, and those feet are doing their job well. Gives him a bit of a spring as well to negate the danger.

Just realised the floodlights are on at Edgbaston. There's a mixture of clouds, sunshine and blue skies as well, which with the right amount of photo editing makes for a very moody album cover if you're of the Enigma type. Anderson too finds some swing, getting it away from the right-handed Azhar. Bit too wide to be thinking about a shot and the batsman keeps it safe.

A huge 45 minutes - with the new ball too. England really need to grasp this session.

If it ain't working, start afresh... two balls in. Broad opts against taking the new ball initially, but gets driven for four through cover by Younus. So the Notts man goes "right, that's it!" and all that, and promptly calls for the new ball. There could be hope with some swing on show, though Younus' shuffling allows him to glance away for four to fine leg. Best laid plans and so forth.

Two runs from that Vince over, which was the last before the second new ball. The revised finish time, by the way, is 18:15 BST, although they can play until 18:45 to make up the overs. Ten overs remain today.

Andy Williams: Papering over cracks previously - need a top-class spinner on these days - why never pick Rashid? - also Finn never does it.
