But Misbah, the grandaddy of Test cricket, remains as England's biggest obstacle to getting back in this match.

So two wickets to fall this morning, Younus Khan somehow getting a leg-side tickle to Chris Woakes and Asad Shafiq having his furniture removed by Stuart Broad.

Misbah just looks so at home - stately. He's flying the flag for his country, making sure Pakistan will build this lead. Anything above 75 or 100, there's only one winner. England will have to fight to draw the game.

Jonny Bairstow sprints to the other end in the hope of squeezing in another over, but Bruce Oxenford isn't having any of it. Lunch. A pretty even session, 79 runs and two wickets, but Pakistan still marginally on top in the match.

Lee Allan-Smith: Yesterday when I was at Edgbaston I saw a man with a cricket bat with 5 holes down the middle with pints of beer in. Genius.

I reckon Pakistan could sweep Moeen with their eyes closed. Misbah for a single, Sarfraz a top edge for four, then out of the middle behind square for another boundary. This might be the last one before lunch....

Sure enough, it's another double change from England. Sorry to bang on, but does it not hint at a lack of imagination? Anyway. Finn off, Chris Woakes back on. Sarfraz walks at the Warwickshire man, so Woakes bangs the ball in. Innocuous over. Five minutes until lunch.

Moeen's bowling very quickly. He needs to bowl slower, get it up in the air and tempt the batsman to try and take it over the top.

I take it all back. Moeen Ali is on, maybe even sneaking in three overs before the break. Not a catcher in sight for Misbah, who is instantly jolted to life at the sight of Moeen. Reverse sweep for four. Something tells me that Misbah doesn't rate Moeen.

  14. Pak 318-5published at 12:47

Yes! This is what we wanted to see. Proof that the mega beer carrier exists. A few questions. How did you manage to get it into the ground? And how much does it cost to buy a 28-pint round? Finn still bowling, England's rota clearly not showing that it is yet time for a change. We'll probably get a token over or two of Moeen Ali before lunch.

How England would have loved to have sent Misbah on his way. His continuing presence is their biggest obstacle to remaining in this match. There's only one slip now for the skipper, who waits for the galloping Broad. Atmosphere just a touch flatter, as if Misbah is administering a death by a thousand cuts.

It was a genuine edge. It wouldn't have carried to fourth slip. It went so quickly past the harakari position that Joe Root finds himself in.

    Pak 306-5

Close! Joe Root is very close at third slip, so close that he's wearing a helmet, and an edge from Misbah has flashed by quicker than a hiccup. Steven Finn the bowler - how he needs a wicket - Misbah's feet going nowhere. Just short of a length, thick outside edge, past the left hand of the diving Root and away to third man for four.

At the Lord's Test in July the guy sitting next to me served up red wine from the CamelBak hydration backpack he used to get around the drinks limitation. I can't recall the vintage.

    Misbah 25, Sarfraz 1

On the front row, a lady pours something light and bubbly from what looks to be flask designed specifically for wine. I didn't know such a thing existed. Incredibly posh. Broad to Sarfraz as the sun plays a bit of hide and seek behind a cloud. The wicketkeeper, underneath a sleeveless sweater, defends on the off stump. Tense stuff. England need one more, just one more...
