Sunshine in Brumingham, hum of the crowd turned up a notch. Anderson has a leg gully gully for Misbah, whose attitude to playing the short ball is similar to that of Homer Simpson when he tried boxing - take the blows. Predictable short from Jimmy, Misbah nudging and scampering.

You can see Woakes has not quite got his rhythm. He's a bit frustrated. He's trying different things, and he got a bit lucky with that wicket down the leg side.

On the subject of the beer carrier, Blowers has been discussing his maiden Jagerbomb. He was confused that he had a glass within his glass, which is understandable. Even though he's taken the wicket, Woakes perhaps hasn't bowled as well as Anderson, all a bit two-sided. Shafiq can leave without too much trouble.

It's turned into don't-take-your-eyes-off-it cricket, England suddenly potent, the ball nipping around and threatening the outside edge of both these right handers. Now then, what is this in the crowd? I kid you not, but two chaps have just carried a holder that is housing at least 20 beers. Where have they had that from? Who are they all for? If they had the nous to bring that to the ground with them, they are my new heroes. Where can I get one?

You've got a sense that England have to win this morning session, and win it well, to get back into the Test.

Looking again, Younus really was the victim of his skittish technique, getting miles too far across his stumps and having no control over one he was trying to work to the leg side. Hello, is this a plan from Chris Woakes? There's an identical appeal against new man Asad Shafiq, the whole of Birmingham joining in. This time, there's nothing doing.

It's always slightly unfortunate as a batsman to be out like that. But Younus is that kind of player. He gets down the leg side quite early looking to flick. It's a good catch by Bairstow. England have a great opportunity now.

    Younus c Bairstow b Woakes 31 (Pak 274-4)

How England needed this. To continue the theme of Pakistan losing wickets in odd fashion, Younus Khan has gifted one to Chris Woakes off a pretty filthy leg stump half-volley. Younus, as he does, jumps across his stumps, follows the ball and gets a tickle down the leg side and into the gloves of Jonny Bairstow. Is that the slice of fortune that will kickstart England's day?

    Younus 31, Misbah 1

Oooofff. Almost a chance. Misbah gets turned around by Anderson, looping the ball back down the track but just short of the bowler in his follow through. In the crowd, there's a young girl reading a Harry Potter book, not sure which one. Back on the field, Younus pulls away just as Anderson hits his delivery stride. Anderson, a kettle on the heat for most of this match, looks ready to boil.

He doesn't play it great but he puts the body on the line and lets the ball hit him.

The sun tries to poke through as Woakes skids in to Misbah, who is already showing the desire to replicate the patience of Aslam and Azhar. He moves so little at the crease he can barely be bothered to duck a bumper, the ball hitting him on the shoulder and lopping over Jonny Bairstow for four leg byes. England bowling OK, but Pakistan's morning so far.

Nice, steady start by Pakistan. England have got the ball to swing but Pakistan haven't followed it.

Anderson is on two warnings for running on the pitch, so is bowling wide of the crease. Already they are singing his name inside Edgbaston. Make no mistake, today will be rowdy. After tea the Hollies Stand will have consumed more lager than David Boon. Single to get Misbah off the mark.

    Younus 30, Misbah 0

Chris Woakes has blue heels on his spikes. They kick up behind him as he slips in towards Younus, who holds the bat with both hands very high on the handle. Woakes is wobbling the ball both ways, but errs on to the pads and is whipped through the vacant square-leg area for four, with Younus following that with a guide to third man for another boundary.
