    Trail by 39 runs

Misbah, probably the coolest man in world cricket, peers through his whiskers and soft-handedly defends Anderson with feet that will only move if the earth begins to tremor. Buzz in the crowd, touch more swing from Jimmy, another maiden. Probing start by England so far.

Interesting. For decades it's been Anderson and Broad, but the latter wasn't at the races yesterday so England give morning duties to Chris Woakes. Younus, still batting like a man on a trampoline, pokes and jabs at the ball, defending and knotting himself up like a pretzel. A maiden.

Pakistan's discipline leaving the ball surprised England yesterday. They were expecting the Pakistan batsmen to be following wide ones - and it took time for them to adjust their lines.

Swing for Anderson, but Younus away with a sharp single on the off side. Misbah, the new man after Azhar Ali was dismissed last thing yesterday, is already getting peppered with some short stuff. Maybe get it up there, Jimmy? Use that early movement?

  6. Pak 257-3published at 11:00

Anderson to Younus. Three slips and a gully. Noise already inside Edgbaston. Play.

    Jimmy roared to the crease...

The crowd has been subdued but it's not up to the crowd to build the atmosphere - it's up to the players to build the atmosphere in the crowd. They will get behind this team but they need a spark.

England's Stuart Broad on TMS: "Our job is to continue what we did yesterday with the patience and try not to let Pakistan score at a good rate.

"It's a pitch that doesn't give you any value from the top of off, so you just have to test the patience of a batsman and hope for an error.

"They played absolutely fantastically yesterday. You don't know if they'll do that the same today. If we could bowl them out after tea, we'd be happy.

"When we bat again we need to bat big. If we get the same in our second innings that Pakistan get in their first innings, then they'll have a chase of 300."

I'm also told that it's National Underwear Day. That has nothing to do with the cricket, but I'm just letting you know.

Pakistan's Azhar Ali, who fell for 139 off the final ball of the day, on TMS: "We need a good healthy lead because we have to bat last and we don't want to give away this opportunity. We have to bat well and if we bat long then the pitch deteriorates more."

Blow for Pakistan losing Azhar to the last ball of the day but they will be at least starting today with their two most experienced batsmen at the crease.

There's a little bit of rough for Yasir Shah, but it looks like a featherbed - and Pakistan like playing on these type of wickets. Pakistan could collapse - we know what they are like - but if they get a 100-run lead, I can only see one winner.
