Well played. There was potential for a wobble after a couple of early wickets, but Bairstow and Mooen came together and took the game away from Pakistan.

That is it, the end of England's day and one that leaves them with the opportunity to push for victory tomorrow. For so long, Pakistan had things under control, but Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali have snatched it away. 414-5, a lead of 311. Sunday will be a cracker.

All smiles in the England dressing room, Jimmy Anderson even doing a few tricks with a football. He's got it balancing on the back of his head while Travor Bayliss and Paul Farbrace ignore him. Behave, Jim. Gary Ballance then picks up the ball and gives it what can only be described as a bite. One over to go.

Not only are the wheels off for Pakistan, but the tyres, the hubcaps, the axels, the seatbelts, the handbrake and the gearstick. If you'd told England at the start of the day that, by the end, Azhar Ali would be bowling round the wicket to Jonny Bairstow, they'd have bitten your leg off. Jonny B sweeps for four. Still the crowd sings. Sore heads and throats in the morning.

Moeen, all wrists and strong bottom hand, whips Yasir through mid-wicket for a couple to bring up the 400. This has been some recovery from England. The crowd are in full voice as the sun sets on Edgbaston - and possibly Pakistan's hopes of winning this match? Five off the over. Easy peasy.

Moeen, squinting into the early-evening sun, works Azhar's loopy leggies to deep square for a single before Bairstow fails to punish a rank long hop.

Yasir Shah's fingers are going to need an ice sink tonight. I can't remember a time when he wasn't bowling. Sarfraz is the only man in Bairstow's post code. The rest of the fielders are in the Mailbox, the Bull Ring and on Broad Street. The crowd still sing about not wanting to go home. England don't either - they would happily bat all night.

Paul Roberts: England may not have a match-winning wicketkeeper or frontline spinner but we've got cracking mid-to-lower order batsman.

Dave Wood: Strong argument to move Ali up the order at the expense of Vince/Ballance to get Rashid in the side.

Pakistan are begging for the close, waving the white flag. For them, the chance of victory looks to be gone. Indeed, the contest looks to have been temporarily suspended. It will resume when England feel like they have enough runs. Expect that to come some time in the first hour tomorrow. Six overs to go today.

If I was England captain, I would have a blast tomorrow morning, try and get 40 or 50 runs sharpish. England will push hard tomorrow but it's looking like a draw.

This has been a crucial knock from Moeen Ali. When he came to the crease this match, and the series, were in the balance. A busy and classy half-century later and England are in the pound seat. His seventh Test fifty off only 64 balls - it took him 16 to get off the mark. A game-changer.

If Pakistan don't get the 90 overs in today, which of their players will be dishing out the refund? A fifth bowler finally brought into the attack, Azhar Ali's filthy leg-spin showing why we've had to wait so long. Moeen misses one long hop, but doesn't fail to pull a second for four. That's the 100 partnership at better than five an over.
