    Yasir 29-3-90-2

So, in this series, Ballance has been bowled behind his legs and twice caught down the leg side. He simply gets too far across his stumps. Soft, soft cricket. Moeen Ali the new man, beaten on the outside edge. Game back in the balance. One more for Pakistan...

The captain put a leg slip there, and he knows Ballance is trying to play fine. Once you see a man there, you shouldn't play so fine. I don't think that was too smart from Ballance.

He's done it again! Gary Ballance gets into all sorts of trouble when Yasir Shah bowls round the wicket and the left-hander and has been caught down the leg side again. In the first innings it was a tickle to the wicketkeeper, now it's a turn straight into the hands of leg slip. He must know the fielder is there, so why play that shot? The honey trap was set and Ballance is Winnie the Pooh stuck in the hole.

I think England have got their noses in front. England are just starting to put the pressure back on Pakistan. They'll be asking them "can you survive 70-75 overs to save the match?".

Viking claps (surely they shouldn't be allowed unless you're Icelandic?) and Barmy Army songs from the crowd as Rahat Ali begins a new spell. Lovely evening sunshine in Brumingham, the best weather of the match so far. Some extra bounce has Ballance arcing backwards. Variable? Unpredictable? England won't mind that.

In some ways I hope England don't get too many. If Pakistan have to get 230 or 240 we will have a good game on our hands.

Top work, Just. Still hard to call this one. Stick two wickets on this and Pakistan will feel they are right in it. However, the conditions remain good for batting and England are inching their way along. Still, at the current rate, a declaration wouldn't be on the cards until some time tomorrow. Burning slowly, build to the crescendo. It could be a cracking finish.

For those hoping England will declare tonight, I wouldn't be risking the mortgage on it. Alastair Cook, let's not forget, did not enforce the follow-on despite having a 391-run first-innings lead at Old Trafford - and declared only when Pakistan's target had reached 565. Here's Stephan Shemilt to talk you through the final two hours of play.

A steward confiscates a beach ball from the crowd. Boos all round. A topless man wearing a bushy blond wig and a Boris Johnson face mask finds a replacement from somewhere - and proceeds to tease the steward by dangling it over the boundary fence. Cheeky. Sohail still chugging in, bless him, hammering away on or around off stump. Ballance up to the task.

Jonny Bairstow has scored 783 runs this year, which is a record by a wicketkeeper in a calendar year. It beats Matt Prior's 777 in 2012.

As if on cue, Bairstow makes his move, hitting Amir for four through cover courtesy of a skewed drive that is nowhere near the middle of the bat. If mere mortals hit that it would barely reach the edge of the square.

If Jonny can score a quick 50-60 runs then we can declare with time to bowl at them tonight and 300 the target. We would also be giving the poor people who've spent good money on a ticket something worth watching!

Moeen Ali sits in the dressing room, energy drink in hand, slowly rolling his neck like a man about to start a Pilates class. He's got to be the most laidback cricketer to have played the game. I can't imagine he spends too much time worrying about whether he remembered to put the bins out. One off that Sohail over.

Rich: Of all the people commenting, who was perfect at their job within a couple of months? Give Vince a chance. Obviously has talent.

Vince Kenny: So Vince faced 130 odd balls and batted for 3 hours plus but one lapse means he's useless? You should have watched in the 90's!

    Amir 25-7-53-2

Amir finding swing, but straight on to the middle of Ballance's bat as he glances to fine-leg for as easy a four as a professional cricketer is likely to get. Still, tidy figures from Pakistan's best bowler in this innings.

  18. Highest successful chases at Edgbastonpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

Who's on top? It's a tough one to call with any certainty. But this might be worth considering... Already, Pakistan would have to complete the third highest successful chase to win a Test at Edgbaston. The previous best are:

    • 283-5: South Africa to beat England, 2008
    • 211-3: England to beat New Zealand, 1999
    • 157-3: West Indies to beat England, 1991

Good spot, James. I suspect there might be some sunburn lines later on... A maiden from Sohail to get us under way, Ballance playing and missing with a cut.
