James, what have you done?! The man under the most pressure in England's batting line-up gifts his wicket - there's no other word for it - by steering Amir straight into Younus' bread basket at second slip. Slip catching practice if ever I saw it.

I have no idea about the result. A 100-run lead is a heavy advantage. Pakistan are always two wickets away from making it interesting. With England's middle order a bit uncertain at times, Pakistan will be hoping for a couple of dismissals.

Sohail Khan, who took 5-96 in the first innings but has 1-71 so far in the second, is summoned by his captain. "Give me your best, big man." His third ball bounces twice before reaching wicketkeeper Sarfraz. Ballance then cuts a wide long hop for four to end the over. Misbah might have to rethink his plan.

Ladies and gentlemen, the new ball has been taken. Three deliveries into the over, and after being clipped for four by Ballance, Rahat Ali gets his big mitts on a shiny cherry. Vince whips the last ball for four off his hips for another boundary. Very classy stroke.

Vince has been solid, very solid against spin, apart from that one leg sweep. He looks like a real Test batsman. He looks like the real deal. He always gets to this point, and then tends to nick off. He's aesthetically pleasing. I like him - he's got a future.

The new ball, by the way, is available but hasn't been taken. Pakistan sticking with Yasir, who is milked for a single apiece by Vince and Ballance.

If I was England, I wouldn't feel safe until the lead is 300. Then again, I am a merchant of doom.

Ballance, high backlift followed by a shuffle across his stumps, is twice beaten by Rahat, who is bowling a tight line in Geoffrey's corridor of uncertainty. A group of Richie Benaud lookalikes, armed with plastic microphones, break into a rendition of 'Delilah' in the crowd. Only at the cricket.

I can't see how James Vince thinks the leg sweep is best shot to play given how Root got out.

  11. Eng 240-3published at 15:00 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

If Pakistan are to induce an England collapse, you sense Yasir is the man to do it. He finds extravagant turn to beat batsman Vince and keeper Sarfraz - two byes is the outcome - before Vince sweeps very, very fine for four. I think Vince's beard has grown during this innings.

Glorious, Gary. Absolutely glorious. It's full and wide from Rahat and it's driven beautifully through cover. I think that may have scorched the grass. Defence is the name of the game for the remaining five balls of the over. The new ball is available in one over.

Yasir Shah has 89 wickets in his first 15 Tests, equalling the record of George Lohmann, dating back to the 1800s.

Yasir fancies his chances against Ballance here - he has a slip, leg slip, short leg and a shortish mid-on all poised. There's also a man two thirds of the way to the boundary at backward square-leg. Ballance kicks Yasir away before forcing through point for three when he drops short.

What was Joe Root thinking? For so long since Lord's, Yasir has been nullified by England. They have made him desperate. He went round the wicket and set the trap. The worst possible shot, out of the rough, was the sweep. Root knew, it took him 20 minutes to get off.

One good thing that may come of Root's departure is Pakistan may be tempted to attack more, which might create a few more scoring opportunities. Or maybe not. Rahat again angling it across Vince, who again practises his leave.

    Yasir 24-3-77-1

As well as Root played, you can't say that his innings wasn't without alarm. Dropped on 25 by Hafeez at first slip, he almost played on off Sohail too moments ago. The left-handed Gary Ballance, the new man, now has the rough outside his off stump to contend with - and the new ball to look forward to in four overs. He's off the mark with a sweep before Vince gives a leg-stump full toss the treatment it deserves.

It's a tempter. The game would go nowhere if Root kept padding away, Yasir knew he would be taking a risk if he attacked. He was done by his own anxiety to get on with the game. The door could be opened again.
