    Root c Hafeez c Yasir 62 (Eng 221-3)

Root blinks first! Yasir gets his man. Round the wicket and wide of leg stump, Root can't resist the sweep but a top edge loops tamely to short fine-leg. He departs for 62, muttering to himself and shaking his head.

Another bowling change, the third of a session that is only 11 overs old. Rahat Ali trying his luck, the left-arm seamer slanting it wide of Vince before adjusting his line to at least make him play.

Pakistan have reverted to Plan C: Yasir round the wicket now to Vince, who is content to defend with bat rather than pad. The closest Pakistan come to a breakthrough is a minor mix-up with the running as Root rejects Vince's call for a single. The new ball that Michael Vaughan mentioned is six overs away.

Pakistan are hoping for a mistake, and they're looking for the second new ball. Maybe they're hoping to nick a couple with that.

Apologies if you're trying to listen overseas to TMS - I'm told the technical gremlins have got to us again. I'm afraid you'll have to put up with me in the meantime. Root mixing fluency with fortune at the moment, almost playing on to Sohail as he attempts a guide to third man off the back foot.

Is declaration a gut feel or is someone sat on a computer in the dressing room working out how many overs Pakistan will face and comparing with runs needed to let Cooky know the run rate?

    Root 62, Vince 27

Root follows up a delicate late cut off Yasir with a far less convincing sweep which takes the bottom edge and skids past the keeper. Vince follows him by glancing the leggie for the third boundary of the over. A positively prolific 13 off the over. Just what the doctor - and the England fans - ordered.

Vince is playing a dangerous game here. He looks as cool as a cucumber but every so often has a fiddle at one outside off. This time Sohail finds the edge... yet it lands just short of slip. Inches away from carrying. Tense times.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq is mixing it up: leg-spinner Yasir Shah is back on. He drops short and Joe Root rocks back to pull with power and placement for four. That's his fifty - his 22nd in Tests - and England's lead breaches 100. Three singles to go with that boundary.

That's the only shot he looks like getting out with. The big one on the drive and caught in the grabbers.

The camera pans to a group dressed in whites sat behind a row of Where's Wallys in the crowd. Let's hope they don't do their washing together. Root clips Sohail off his pads for three, but Vince is drawn into a tentative drive outside off that connects with nothing more than thin air.

92 is not a lot, but it's a lot in Test cricket when you've got five sessions in a Test match.

    Amir 21-5-46-1

More Mohammad Amir. More wide stuff, so wide that umpire Joel Wilson gets a chance to stretch his arms. The left-armer returns back over the wicket to draw false stroke from Root, who plays and misses attempting to cut one that kept a smidge low. The beginnings of a chant can be heard in the crowd.

Sohail Khan into the attack in place of Yasir. England's first-innings destroyer oversteps for the fifth time in the innings, and ninth time in the match. Easy runs for England in what could well be a tight finish. Root drives with typical style but the man on the cover boundary limits him to one. Singles apiece for Vince and Root to end the over.
