I feel your pain Stephan. Only link we have here in France and when live update failed Dad and two tiny boys stared in sadness at laptop screen to increasingly annoyed mum by pool.

Apologies, Tom. I know we provide a valuable service in difficult social situations. If anyone else has suffered while we were away, let me know. I'll see if I can soothe your pain. Finn, for whom a wicket is a distant memory, a spot on the horizon, begs when Aslam is hit on the pads. It's going over by about half a foot.

Quite enjoyed the period of silence? I've spent the last hour out for breakfast with the missus and mother-in-law. The live feed was the only reason I agreed to go...

It still looks like a time to be batting at Edgbaston. The surface is aging as well as Helen Mirren. Sunshine, nothing doing in the air, a big ask for England to take remaining nine wickets. Azhar, wearing some very brave luminous spikes, drives Woakes through mid-off for four. England doing the right thing in getting the ball up there, but Pakistan answering all questions.

Jimmy Anderson has just made the cardinal sin. Yes, you misfield, but you don't do it to one of your mates. Poor old Steven Finn, he can't buy a wicket at the moment.

I don't even think it's that hi-tech. I'm pretty sure the hamsters on the wheel that give us our power and simply knocked off, refusing to work until they were given a pay rise. We've had to get a couple of gerbils to cover. Meanwhile, Sami Aslam is tucking in to Steven Finn. Drive through mid-off, where Anderson misfields, then a clip off the pads. Lovely from Aslam, but fears for Finn.

Ooooowwwwwzzzzaaaaatttttt! England give a huge shout when Woakes hits Aslam on the pads, even considering a review when it's turned down. It's pitched outside leg and missing off, so they are right to keep their powder dry. When Aslam drives for four, some Pakistan fans in the crowd wave flags and make a right noise. Long day, fellas...

Ian Probert: Quite enjoyed that little period of silence. Reminds me of when Herol Graham fought Mike McCallum during a BBC strike. Bliss.

Steven Finn replaces Stuart Broad, perhaps bowling for his place in their side. There are two clergymen in the crowd, both complete with collar, so perhaps he could have a word with those chaps. The pace is reasonable, 84mph, but the impressive Aslam pounces on a full ball to drive through mid-off for four.

I'll be honest, I'm a little upset about what happened during those technical problems. No one came to check on me. Did no one think it was odd there were no words? Not one message of concern.

England think they are on to something with these leg-side catchers for Azhar. For Woakes, there's a man at a very straight silly mid-on. At the moment, Azhar looks organised.

To aid our little catch-up of the morning's events, have a watch of what happened during England's four overs with the bat.

  16. Pak 21-1published at 12:14

Broad, England's successful bowler, places the ball very deliberately in his right hand as the Barmy Army trumpeter plays the theme from Rocky. Azhar Ali, who arrived at the fall of the first wicket, watchfully leaves as the ball is hung outside the off stump. England have three catchers on the leg side, so Broad occasionally goes straight. Azhar, though, is up to the task.

Batting in the first innings was different for Pakistan. Now the game is set up, it’s a different kind of pressure. They are expected to bat out 80 overs. If Misbah bats like he has done in this series, Pakistan have chance to draw the match. If England get Misbah early then they can win the match.

  18. Pak 20-1published at 12:07

England batted for four overs before declaring earlier. Moeen Ali was left unbeaten on 86.

Since England got the ball in hand, they've sent down nine overs. There hasn't been a great deal of movement in the air and the pitch is behaving itself. Apart from that horror shot from Hafeez, there was one appeal from Broad against Sami Aslam.

Are you still with me? Can you read this? You've probably noticed that technical problems have rendered us silent for the best part of an hour.

Hopefully, we're back now. I'll fill you in with what you've missed. The headline is that Pakistan have lost Mohammad Hafeez in a fashion that most club cricketers would be embarrassed by. More to come...

It wasn’t required. He went for that half-flick and half-pull. The fielder was there waiting for it. So it’s a real bonus for England. Hafeez has thrown it away.
