So there's away swing, and then there's wide enough to drive a camper van through. Broad deviates it so far, even Bairstow's best penalty-save impressions can't stop it, and Cook must provide back up. After all of that, Broad turns around to discover the umpire's given it a wide, and the bowler can't believe it. I've seen that look on forwards denied a penalty after making a meal of it. Azhar then glances an inswinger for four to fine leg.

Plenty of people yawning away in the stands. Heavy lunch and all that...

Great delivery by Woakes. It's still there - you've got to keep reminding yourself of that. One of those will pop up.

Definitely some away swing early on in this session. Woakes gets one to shape away just enough to draw Azhar's bat forward. The ball narrowly goes past his outside edge. Cue, much sharp intaking of breath among bowler and fielders. Root even jumped up in a half-appeal.

That's the fifty partnership, off 94 balls.

A whip-round might be a drop in the ocean that is a modern international cricketer's bank account. But I suppose it's the thought that counts. Anyway, moving away from the naughty step, Broad gets some wild swing away from Azhar Ali that requires a near full-length dive from Bairstow. Azhar responds with a lovely straight drive for four.

That catch yesterday was extremely dodgy, and the umpire's decision made no sense - if you can't tell whether it's a clean catch or not, then the batsman can't be given out. If Alex Hales is going to be fined 15% for simply pointing out this simple fact, then the least we can do is return the favour he did to a fan at Edgbaston, and have a whip-round to reimburse him.

Sweet shot from Shafiq, right out of the sweet spot. He clips Woakes' first ball - on a fuller length - through mid-wicket for four. Crowd not in full voice - or in any voice for that matter - at the moment. That will do Pakistan very nicely. The last thing they want is to lose a few wickets and then be in a cauldron of fear.

This has got the feel of a long day at the office for the England bowlers...

Not even an over in and a man in a bright blue T-shirt has already given us our first delay of the afternoon session, standing up mid-over right next to a bright white sightscreen. Great piece of contrast if you're into photo editing and all that, not so good when you're about to face Stuart Broad. He's hidden himself now. Broad keeps the slip cordon in place for Azhar, who blocks the over out for a maiden.

Broad to bowl the first over after lunch, Azhar Ali to face up. Can fortunes shift like desert sand?

Cheers Mitch! It’s a scorching day here at BBC towers – makes for a nice change. It’s a scorching day at The Oval. So is the heat getting to England? Three dropped catches, conceding 94, which included 26 to the nightwatchman Yasir Shah, Pakistan now on a solid enough platform, and Geoffrey dropping Pokemon references. The hosts looking more troubled than a man who’s about to have his house demolished to make way for a bypass who then discovers his wife's about to leave him as well.

You'll be able to listen to the interview with London Mayor Sadiq Khan as a podcast a little later.

Umpires coming out - I'm not sure if England had time to fit in any catching practice while they were having their lunch - let's see if they can hold on to any in the afternoon session. Here to talk you through it all is Bibhash Dash.
