Julian: Is there a right way to eat a fry up? And what are the regional variations (in method, not content)? Is it like scone-eating?

So many burning questions in our life... so little time.

    Shafiq 69, Younus 17

I said in the previous Test match that Younus' footwork may be unusual, but it's effective when the ball's nipping around a bit. Anderson bowls slightly fuller and Younus shuffles across to work it through mid-wicket for four. He keeps those legs more conventional for his next boundary which is through mid-off. But it was another full one from Anderson who's undoing his good work from earlier.

Finn's back for a spell. That jet black hair flicked back like he's standing in some hero wind. Nothing heroic about the short and wide delivery which Shafiq crunches through point for four. Shafiq rules this over completely by taking four off the final delivery. Pakistan's scoreboard equation looking very symmetrical.

It's slim pickings around the country, and it may be because spinners are being asked to play all three formats where they have to keep the runs down. I know Gareth Batty's 38 and in the autumn of his career - Alec Stewart mentioned him this morning and some may say it's a bit one-eyed because of his Surrey connections - but I'd take Batty to India, like they did a few years ago with Shaun Udal. I can't name many others - there's Leach at Somerset, and Zafar Ansari.

My only concern is that we're going to play on turning pitches this winter and we'll need a match-winning spinner like Swann was. We're blessed for fast-medium bowlers, we're perhaps short of a real fast man, as are most countries. But it might hurt us somewhere if we can't find a match-winning spinner.

Anderson's overs are becoming an exercise in how many sharp intakes of breath you can have per six deliveries. He gets one to move ever so subtly away from the right-handed Shafiq and players and public at large are left wondering 'what if'. Anderson and Woakes the only England bowlers without a wicket so far by the way.

    There, that should do it.

Moeen gets vital wickets. It's a gift - don't knock it. People don't think he's a great off-spinner and take liberties, trying to whack him. If he was Graeme Swann they'd play carefully for a few balls, but they get sucked in, try to knock him around and get out.

#bbcricket - the place for voracious debate that defines our generation and the principles we fight for. I am so glad to be of service. Moeen keeps it tidy in his latest set of six, though Younus sneaks a single to prevent the maiden. Pakistan's shoots of recovery now worth 27.

Chance? I certainly think so. Shafiq sliced at a rising Anderson delivery that was a bit close to the body. The ball flies towards slips, Root at second half rises for it then gives up, Cook takes the jump but it's past him before he can react fully. A four in the end, but I think that's another opportunity gone for England.

That's Shafiq's fastest Test fifty, from 75 balls. He's never done it in fewer than 77 balls before.

Careful Craig. Pie in cricket could be deemed controversial - if combined with the word chucker or something probably. But from a food point of view excellent work. Moeen gives away another four to Shafiq, this time cut through gully.

Played Shafiq. I said he's not looked fazed by the loss of Azhar and it's proven as he reaches his 15th Test half-century. Cracks Moeen for four to get there. And it continues to be a long day at the office for England, a sharp contrast to how some of our readers are doing. Plenty of sunshine and beer making its way to the #bbccricket portal.

We all get bad decisions, but you shouldn't go into the third umpire's room like Alex Hales did. He's got to dampen that down a bit. Clearly England were wound up a bit - Hales gave Yasir a verbal volley again this morning, and then he dropped him.

If you're going to play the verbal, in-your-face game like the Australia side of the late 90s and early 2000s, you've got to be switched on for every delivery.

Anderson's getting the ball to jump around a bit, a bit like Younus really. In fact, he tests Younus' solar plexus with a wicked one that jags back sharply. Bet that hurt ever so slightly. It's also the drinks break - no, I've not kept count how many official and unofficial ones we've had today.
