First-innings centurion Moeen Ali is away with a stylish clip off his pads to the boundary first ball. Gower-esque some say. It was a very nice shot, but no-one did it like David.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match SpecialIt's the first mistake he's made. A new bowler - I said keep changing the bowling - and that one bounced a little and he was forcing it. The keeper takes it shoulder height, shows the bounce and carry. It wasn't a great shot.

The bowling change works. It was not a particularly threatening one but Ballance fished at it and a thin edge is gleefully snaffled.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match SpecialI know England have got six wickets in hand and are in trouble. But they have played this morning with no alarms. Even when the leg-spinner bowls in the rough to Ballance he's got right forward and smothered it. He's played it with his head right over the ball. It's a very good pitch and it's a question of can these two batsmen with different types of play hold their concentration together and have selectivity of shots?

Shah returns, not a great deal of rough spots for him to aim at outside the left-hander's off-stump and Ballance is able to go back to keep him out comfortably. Shah, who bears a slight resemblance to legendary former Brazil forward Zico, consults his wicketkeeper Sarfraz, but there is no success for the tourists yet.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match SpecialThe pitch is not doing anything like it was yesterday. It's flat. And we've got two different type of batsmen. Bairstow's like a baseball batsman looking to hit everything and Ballance who's the gutsy type.

Another delightfully struck drive through the covers to the boundary from Bairstow and a second warning for Wahab for running into the danger zone. One more indiscretion and he is off for the innings. The fifty partnership arrives.

BBC Test Match Special statisticianIf England were to win this Test, it would be the second biggest deficit, after the fall of the fourth wicket in the second innings, to overturn - after Headingley '81.

And just the one leg bye in this Amir over. A rather mournful horn emanates from the effects microphones, reminding me of a more jaunty hunting-style horn blown by a Bognor Regis Town supporter at Nyewood Lane. But it was not a good day yesterday so that subject will not continue.

Quite a few empty white seats around the vast Oval theatre, the crowd still warming up. It's overcast but we haven't seen any dramatic swing from the Pakistan swing specialists yet. Just a leg bye in this one from Wahab as the tourists seek a breakthrough.

Jay: England fans shouldn't lose heart. It's a good week for the lower middle order to score centuries and bail their teams out.

The dangerous Wahab Riaz is the new bowler with his rapid, slingy left-armers from round the wicket to Ballance, with two slips, a leg slip and a short-leg waiting expectantly for a chance. The England 100 is brought up by a sizeable no-ball. Bairstow utilises his high backlift to thump through the covers for his third boundary.
