James Drace-Francis: Jason Roy to open with Cook. Forget the T20/Test divide, he's a proper batting talent not a rabbit in the headlights.

Happy To Be Tommy: Smacking a quick 3-400 on day one of a Test might seem fun but it won't help win Tests. When will this team learn?

BBC presenter Mishal Husain with thoughts on questioning the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Moeen Ali and Kevin Pietersen: "Sachin and Moeen are quite hard to interview because they are both very modest with their achievements. I could not associate that particular trait with Kevin Pietersen but I found him very impressive and also very charming. It's a great shame we didn't see more of him in this sort of environment in his peak years."

BBC presenter Mishal Husain on TMS: "It has been such a glorious morning at The Oval, just to look out and feel both of these countries are a part of me and have helped me to become what I am today.

"I think if you're of Asian origin, cricket runs through you."

Stephen Hill: Move Moeen up to five and make room for #AdilRasheed, external, job and finish as we say in Yorkshire.

Mr Mark Mitchener says: "You won't want to hear that Rashid currently has 0-127 from 28 overs in the Roses match..."

If England want some reverse psychology to help inspire them, worth mentioning that today is the day 26 years ago that a certain Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar scored the first of his 100 hundreds.

It was a match-saving 119 on the final day of the second Test against England at Old Trafford. Tendulkar joined forces with Manoj Prabhakar and the pair batted for more than two hours to help draw the match.

The score when that partnership began? 183-6, even more precarious than England's 193-6 when Woakes joined Bairstow.

Pakistan fans in the crowd enjoy that, big flags being waved. It was a relatively straightforward catch made to look difficult by Sarfraz. Moeen played for the ball to come back in and that's why it took the edge. That's the key breakthrough. One more partnership they have to get rid off and it may be over really quickly.

Amir is up to 86.5mph but Woakes, who has sends them down quicker than that himself these days, is up to the task. A judicious shuffle of the equipment is enough to delay the final ball so that the clock is at 1pm by the end of the over and that will be the end of the session. We have had 106 runs but those two wickets have gone and Jonny has much to do this afternoon.

Chris Woakes is the new man, he's averaging 43 for the series with a best of 58 and he keeps out Shah, with a slip, a gully and a silly point poised.

    Moeen c Sarfraz b Shah 32 (Eng 193-6)

Yes they can, in short. Bit of a flat-footed prod from Moeen and Sarfraz clings on behind the stumps.

The sun breaks through in south London and Bairstow provides further illumination with his two more boundaries, driving Amir down the ground and playing a late cut wide of second slip and the third man trudging after it in vain. "Pakistan Zindabad" chants ring out. Can they inspire a late success?

Round the wicket from Shah to Bairstow but he glances it comfortably away for a single and the pressure is averted again, England reducing that deficit confidently.

England have to think can we somehow get to 350 or 370 and give Pakistan something to chase? They're playing the right way, looking to score. They will need a bit of luck to get to 350, maybe some dropped catches.

The fifty partnership from 72 balls, impressive stuff from England this morning, and Moeen collects his fourth four with another stylish stroke off Amir from his extensive repertoire.

That's pretty much half the ball flushing the middle stump. Pretty sure the bails would come off. But that's the rules. When you review an lbw you have to be absolutely sure.

    Bairstow 58, Moeen 27

One of the vagaries of the DRS. Half the ball is seen to be clipping the stumps but the decision is umpire's call so it has to remain not out. Pakistan lose the last of their reviews.

A more conventional six for Moeen, a sashay, or Rio-style samba, down the track to Shah and lofted mightily into the stand over wide long-on.
