Are the England supporters employing a reverse psychology here then? Well there are no alarms from Shah in this over, dropping a little short, and the two Yorkshire batsmen collect a single apiece.

Ian Shepherd: We need a miracle really don't we? Need innings of a lifetime to even give us a chance. Probably over by dinnertime.

Russell Anderson: There's more chance of a humble Zlatan Ibrahimovic interview than there is of England saving this game.

A positive start for England, seven runs coming from the over and Gary Ballance punching an authoritative drive through the covers to the boundary.

I think this will end by 2pm or 3pm. Yasir's fizzing, ready to go, he's keen to get into his work. I think one or two in England will be struggling. But this is cricket, anything can happen.

The leg-spinner Yasir Shah will begin the bowling, looking to improve on his already impressive 3-15 from seven overs. A slip and a silly point are in place and Bairstow to face.

So it's odds against England, if we can use that phrase. But Australia won a match when faced with a first innings deficit of 291 once, against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1992. They were not 88-4 in their second innings though. Anyway, the umpires are on their way out to the centre and we're almost ready to begin.

The way Misbah leads, he's cool, he's calm. He had a real bad day at Edgbaston just a few days ago. He came here, lost the toss, but he did his basics. On day one Pakistan were poor for an hour, but all of a sudden they clicked into life.

For a few years now England have been picking players aged 25 or 26, who have had a few years in county cricket. I say why not start with someone younger? Like they did with Root, Cook, Anderson and Broad. There's this young Lancashire lad, who batted all day against Yorkshire. England have got to be willing to be brave. Maybe pick someone who can be a player for the next 10 years.

Lancashire's teenage opener Haseeb Hameed made his first Roses match century to put his side on top at Old Trafford.

I would say 2-2 is probably a fair reflection on how this series has played out.

There are six sessions remaining and they have to win every one to stay in this game. I don't think they will do it. England haven't looked right this week. You can have an excuse if you want, there's always something, but for whatever reason England haven't covered the basics.

Maybe Jonny Bairstow can play the role of Ian Botham in the classic Headingley Test from 1981?, external Well, he's a big-hitting, burly, bearded batsman whose name begins with B. England were actually in a worse position in that match when four wickets down, they were 186 runs behind then. Over to you Jonny.

You've got to have a strong mental mind. You go back to Johannesburg where Michael Atherton batted for 10 hours to save the match. You want to put the scoreboard to one side. If they bowl a bad ball put it away, if it's a good ball just defend. Only four of England's wickets in this match have been good bowling, the rest have been batsman error.

BBC Weather's Philip Avery: "High pressure is dominant and things won't change markedly through the course of the day. Temperatures will be about 18 or 19 degrees. There's not too much breeze. The cloud won't be a bother but there could be a spot of rain. But I don't see the weather being an excuse for England today. If it goes into tomorrow, it will be a dry day, with greater chance of a sunshine."
