I thought when Pakistan took Root's wicket there was a slight chance for them, but then the drizzle came and Amir had to go off with a sidestrain when he was starting to shape the ball.

Pakistan have not had the rub of the green tonight but any side that can't get Bairstow in it, must be a good one.

Wahab tries to intimidate Stokes by digging in a short ball. It beats the batsman but also the keeper and flies away for four byes. The rain continues to fall. I reckon every England fan in the ground would be more than happy if they went off now and England took the win.

Where's Yasir Shah? Where's the mystery bowler? Two or three of his special deliveries to new batsmen and you don't know what might have happened.

The crowd at the Ageas Bowl is very quiet now. In fairness, this is not the one-day cricket they were hoping for today. Morgan does give them something to politely applaud (not cheer) with a steer down leg to get four off Malik.

They almost have something to anxiously mumble about as Stokes rocks back and mistimes a cut and is almost bowled.

The rain is steadily getting heavier. We are sticking it out, though.

Wahab is back. This is Pakistan's top trump - their hail mary. England are well ahead, though, as Duckworth Lewis shows. 135 is a winning total. That is quite an important piece of info as well because it is starting to rain again.

Stoney: Selectors should swallow their pride and drop Morgan. Being captain shouldn't make him untouchable. Out of form, out the team.

  9. Eng 165-3published at 30 overs

Pakistan have climbed up off the canvas and started swinging. Amir beats Stokes' outside edge with a ball that hints at a bit of reverse swing.

Here is the wicket that has put a spring in Pakistan's step...

Less than 100 needed now for victory. After stuffing Root, the least Morgan can do is see the side home. He is 20 not out. Stokes off the mark with a flick to square leg.

Ben Stokes just needs to rein back his natural aggression and get himself in with a few singles. He has plenty of time.

Ben Stokes is the new man. He fends off an Amir ball to end the over.

It's funny how things like a run-out can shift momentum, but England are still in control. There weren't many looks there as Root walked off. The captain has done him, he'll be thinking.

Root run out 61 (Eng 158-2)

Why was there any need for this? Eoin Morgan drops one and sets off for a risky single that results in Joe Root being run out from a direct hit from Azhar.

No need to panic, but why give Pakistan a lift?

If you love cricket it is impossible not to at least admire Joe Root, regardless of where you are from. He sweeps a full toss from Nawaz for four.

OK. The reasons for liking Root are obvious but what about players you've had a soft spot for for less obvious reasons? Maybe you liked Mark Ealham's kind eyes? Or you liked the cut of Craig White's jib?

  17. Eng 151-2published at 26 overs

Morgan and Root don't look to be in any rush. The 150 comes up with a quartet of singles off Shoaib Malik.

  18. Eng 147-2published at 25 overs

What over do England win this in? 12 to go? They're clearly gonna win.

Especially with Root in this form...

I'm hoping England can wrap this up early and I can be home to watch Bake Off on catch-up. There used to be a time when I'd have gone out. Sigh.

Two runs off Shoaib Malik's first over. Pakistan striving for another opening. England not budging an inch.
