Two fours in an over you'll take every day of the week. Amir is getting movement but there wasn't much for Umar Gul, I do think it may be worth getting someone else who might exploit the conditions.

  2. Eng 13-0published at 2 overs

It's an early start for the Jason Roy Firework Show, which is already illuminating the Cardiff gloom. Umar Gul shares the new ball and drops a fraction short, with Roy on to it quicker than a hiccup. Cracking pull for four, followed by a tickle fine for another. Naturally, dance music greets each boundary. Slightly odd on a dank Welsh Sunday morning at a half-empty stadium. You don't go to a nightclub before lunch, do you?

"I know Jason Roy likes to be positive but on this pitch you might need to give yourself a bit of time, be a bit measured for the first few overs."

  4. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

Swing, enough to rattle Roy on the pads and draw a holler from Amir and co. Good shout, but heading down the leg side. More movement, Roy pulling out the Chinese cut to inside edge past the keeper for four and get England under way. Question - why is it called the Chinese cut?

Marc Sewell: For me Chris Jordan is too expensive but other than that, any side picked is a good one and should be too strong for Pakistan

"All the talk before the tour was of Mohammad Amir. He's bowled perfectly well yet hasn't achieved a great deal. Maybe today in this conditions he might."

Here come the England batsmen, Jason Roy and Alex Hales dressed in the familiar two shades of blue. Speaking of blue, there are plenty of empty seats in Cardiff. Roy scratches his guard, Mohammad Amir marks out his run.

A good pal of mine is in Cardiff with his son. Young George is very disappointed that Jos Buttler won't be appearing today. Buttler isn't being rested, but is still suffering from a hammy problem. He might be a doubt for the T20 on Wednesday.

"England have such a bunch of all-rounders that it allows the batsmen at the top of the order to go out and take the game by the scruff of the neck."

BBC Weather's Darren Bett: "We're likely to keep these cloudy skies generally milky skies. If it had been yesterday we wouldn't have got much play at all but at least it should be dry."

England, by the way, are chasing a little bit of their own history today. Victory would give them a first home 5-0 whitewash in an ODI series. Their only other five-zip came away to Zimbabwe in 2001.

"It's an old fashioned pitch a bit of greenery in the middle and bare at the ends. It's the feel of bowl first, it doesn't look like a belter."

I'm not sure I can begin to imagine the premise of Vic Marks The Movie, or how the great man would fit it into an existing talkie.

So, what to make of all that? Are England right to tinker with their line-up, or should they be going for the clean-sweep jugular? Does it even matter which XI England put out, given the one-sided nature of this series? And, after winning the toss on such a bowler-friendly morning, is this Pakistan's best chance to register a W?
