  1. Eng 272-2published at 44 overs

    Run-rate 6.18

David Willey opens his account with a flashing drive wide of off-stump for a brace. The Pakistan supporters are impressive in number and their familiar trademark chant rings around the ground.

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 43.2 overs

    Woakes b Hasan 10 (Eng 270-7)

But the brief cameo comes to a crushing end, an inside edge from Hasan's slower ball crashing into the purple stumps and sending the orange bails high into the overcast skies.

  3. Eng 266-6published at 43 overs

Amir's fingers have been suitably revived for him to return to the attack but Woakes collects three into the covers, aided by Sharjeel Khan being not the quickest to ever grace the outfield

If it had come off, it would have been an incredible shot from Stokes. He came all the way outside off stump, and if he'd been able to stand tall, he'd have got the elevation he was looking for.

  6. Eng 260-5published at 42 overs

Chris Woakes is away first ball with a sharply scampered two. He has made an unbeaten 95 in this format so a few lusty blows would be timely for England.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 41.4 overs

    Stokes c Gul b Hasan 75 (Eng 258-6)

Trying to flick over backward square leg, a stroke which caused the consternation to Amir's fingertips earlier, Stokes is smartly caught there and the Pakistan supporters dance in celebration.

It doesn't matter who England pick, they always have an extremely competent number 11.

  9. Eng 255-5published at 41 overs

    Stokes 74, Dawson

More left-arm spin from Nawaz and a waist high full toss is reverse swept for four by Stokes, who adds another boundary with a deft leg glance. It's his highest ODI score but his Test highest of 258 is not likely to be beaten on this occasion. Mohammad Amir, who still has three overs left to bowl, leaves the field having been struck on the tips of the fingers by a rasping Stokes pull shot in the previous over.

Here's big Ben reaching his second successive fifty of the series.

  11. 6 runs

    Eng 244-5published at 40 overs

    Run-rate 6.10

Striding down the pitch, Stokes smears Gul many rows back for six more at long-on, having earlier hit a four also into the legside. England's most productive over of the innings, with 17 coming from it.

Stokes will like this short straight boundary if he stays at the crease much longer.

  13. Eng 227-5published at 39 overs

    Stokes 51, Dawson 2

Stokes reaches fifty from 63 balls with his second four, thumping Imad emphatically down the ground, the only boundary the slow left-armer has conceded. A sixth ODI fifty for the Durham all-rounder in his 44th match.

  14. Eng 221-5published at 38 overs

    Run-rate 5.81

After his recent ordeal Stokes could really have done without having to dive full length to make his ground for a quick single but he does, and the throw misses the target in any case.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 37.4 overs

    Bairstow c Rizwan b Gul 33 (Eng 219-5)

Bairstow had pulled a slower ball emphatically for four but then he steers one wide of off-stump and it lobs off the glove to backward point. No second successive fifty for the Yorkshireman, who also made four fifties in five Test innings this summer.

Joe Root is a naughty boy. Last year, when Alastair Cook took an unfortunate one in the slips, Root was laughing. Now he's giggling again. Maybe he's never copped one, or he takes a masochistic pleasure from it.

  17. ouch!

    Eng 214-4published at 37.1 overs

The first use of the ouch graphic and I don't think 'ouch' really does it justice. Not only is it the pace of Umar Gul but Stokes gets an inside edge to add further velocity. It misses both groins shall we say. I was listening to 5 live this morning and they were talking about uniquely British things, I'd say the jeers when a player is struck in the unmentionables is definitely one. Stokes is taking a long time to regain his composure.

  18. Eng 214-4published at 37 overs

    Stokes 44, Bairstow 29

Imad spins one like Shane Warne, it must have gone a foot, from middle to wide of off-stump, that will interest England debutant Liam Dawson, the spinner who is due to bat next.

When Buttler is fit, England have a nice problem. They have to find a place for Jonny Bairstow in this one-day side. He's just too good. He has the perfect game for one-day cricket.
