    Eng 293

Broad is running through his repertoire in search of something from this pitch. Imrul isn't playing ball, though, ducking under two short balls that are designed to draw a top-edge from the hook. Don't think Broad will be on much longer - a combination of a spinning track and oppressive heat are seam bowler Kryptonite.

Batty needs to get it straight when it's turning like this. You've got to bowl on middle and leg, nothing wide of off stump. That over justified the decision to open the bowling with him. It's a question of patience, there is always that niggle when it spins like this if you haven't got anything after half a dozen overs.

Dave Ellis: Broadly speaking this is a Batty start to the Bangladesh innings.

  4. Ban 10-0published at 4 overs

Batty is in to this game now. He spins one sharply past Imrul's outside edge and then draws a nick from the batsman that runs away down to third man for two. There's wickets here for the 39-year-old.

I think I would have gone for convention at the other end and see how Woakes goes. It's a day for short spells in any case, unless someone takes a lot of wickets.

  7. Ban 8-0published at 3 overs

The big sweatband on Stuart Broad's right forearm is already getting some good use. It is hotter than the inside of a toaster pitta out there. The Notts seamer is putting it in but this is not his track. Tame.

Let's see if he does it in 2019.

The fifth time Gareth Batty has opened the bowling in first-class cricket. He does it every three years, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

  10. Ban 7-0published at 2 overs

England are opening with a spinner - Gareth Batty. He doesn't make the best start as Imrul cuts him backwards of point for four. He finds a better length in the rest of the over, looping it up and turning it away from the left-hander.

  12. Ban 2-0published at 1 over

Decent start from Broad, who veers off line just once, allowing Tamim to flick the ball off his legs for two to get the home reply going.

The crowd are playing it canny with their seating strategy, gathering wherever there is shade - under the lip of the stand, in the shadow of the floodlights. It means the stands in the full glare of the sun remain deserted.

As in the one-dayers, Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes are the Bangladesh openers. Stuart Broad will start with the ball for England.

I think England will be relieved they have got that far after the start they had, they haven't got major scores but that lower middle order has rescued them time and time again. It's a big asset because they are fragile at the top, they don't know their first four.

Bangladesh's batting line-up is strong, they go down to seven so they'll be feeling confident.

Right then, will England go with a spinner from the start? They are out on the field so we are about to find out...

Take a bow Mehedi Hasan Miraz. The spinner has taken the best figures by a Bangladeshi on debut - 6-80.

Hang your head Steven Finn. The England seamer has decided to grow a very dodgy moustache. For a second I thought Terry Thomas had brought out drinks for Broad and Batty.

It has to affect Bangladesh, knowing they don't get too many chances to get on top of strong opposition. The top five needs to bat well and ensure they get past England's total.

I think it's a pretty decent total, especially the way the spinners bowled right from the start. It will put pressure on the Bangladesh batsmen, they haven't played Test cricket for a while. But they are in the game.
