It is tough going. This is a mini masterclass in playing spin. They are not flustered at all. And they haven't played Test cricket for 14 months. To make that mental shift is impressive.

  2. Ban 98-2published at 36 overs

Batty, spitting ruefully on his way back to his mark which my mum would definitely remark upon disapprovingly, must have thought he would have caused more problems for the batsmen, but these two look well set. The partnership extends to 69.

  3. Ban 95-2published at 35 overs

    Broad 0-11 from 5

There is a silly mid-on only a few yards wide off the cut strip, rather like Michael Vaughan used in the 2005 Ashes, and Broad is going through his variations of slower balls and off-cutters in the early 80s-mph but with no success, Mahmudullah collecting three with a push down the ground.

Tamim looks so fluid. Compared to everyone else, he is taking his guard on leg stump. Instead of getting his foot to the ball he is giving himself room, letting the ball come on and making a fluid movement.

  5. Ban 92-2published at 34 overs

    England 293

A run-out could be the only way to break the partnership at this rate and there is momentary confusion as Tamim is sent back mid-pitch after cutting Batty and seeking a single, but he regains his ground despite a good throw over the bails from Rashid at backward point. A first maiden for Batty though.

I was chirping some of the Bangladeshi gentlemen who serve food at lunch, suggesting to them that they would be all out for 100. I think I might have stitched myself up because every time I've seen them they are saying 'look, look, runs'.

After a three-over opening spell that went for only four runs, Broad is back but Mahmudullah, who has one hundred and 12 fifties in his 28 Tests, plays a delightfully timed back cut to the boundary, the 11th of the innings thus far.

The right result came in the end. Six balls either side of lunch Moeen was given out three times and that decision was reversed. In the majority of decisions, the umpire has some leeway. You can blame Dharamasena but I don't think he had a howler with all three. To have them overturned shows how important DRS has been in this match.

  9. Ban 88-2published at 32 overs

    Tamim 45, Mahmudullah 19

Three comfortable singles in the over and still no maiden for Batty, the partnership extending to 59.

The England players are shielded with ice cream-style parasols held aloft by the reserves, ideal opportunity for a strawberry mivvi but it looks like the old isotonics.

    Drinks breakpublished at 31 overs

Ban 85-2, trail by 208 runs

Stokes causes problems for Tamim with a yorker, the old sand shoe crusher, timed at 88mph but the left-hander digs it out. Surely worth slipping that delivery in again? Time for a drinks break.

  14. DRS to be used in Indiapublished at 08:39 British Summer Time 21 October 2016

So, the DRS system will be used in England's Test series against India next month on a trial basis.

In a statement, the BCCI, who have been wary of implementing the system, wrote: "In a meeting with the ICC and the Hawkeye officials, the improvements made to the system were further evaluated by the BCCI team, who were satisfied that most of the concerns and suggestions that were expressed by BCCI over a period of time, were addressed to a significant extent."

    Good news for Moeen...

  15. Ban 84-2published at 30 overs

    Tamim 44, Mahmudullah 16

The evergreen Batty returns, after an opening six-over spell of 0-16. He has a silly mid-off close to the wicket in addition to the slip and gully but is denied a first maiden as Tamim clips the final ball to deep mid-wicket for two. Feels like 41 degrees out in the centre they reckon.

This is the fifth 50-partnership in six times that Tamim and Mahmudullah have batted together in Test cricket.

  17. Ban 82-2published at 29 overs

    England 293

Tamim picks up successive boundaries on either side of the wicket to record the fifty partnership off 87 balls but Stokes, running his hands through sweat-soaked hair between deliveries, responds by beating the left-hander outside the off-stump. Could be a long afternoon for the all-rounder but he is in jokey mood with the batsmen so far, telling Tamim he would have been lbw.

  19. Ban 73-2published at 28 overs

Just hearing that India have approved the use of DRS for the forthcoming England series, so that record of 10 reviews in an innings could come under threat. Two more singles for the batsmen in this Moeen over and the partnership extends to 44.

  20. Ban 71-2published at 27 overs

    Tamim 32, Mahmudullah 15

Stokes, elasticated grips covering both elbows, already looks rather weary in the extreme heat and humidity - temperatures in the mid-30s - and both batsmen collect singles in something of an innocuous over.
