  1. Eng 50-3published at 12 overs

Root steps back into his crease and lashes away a welcome boundary as Shakib drops too short. He shakes his head and does a bit of hand wafting to try and indicate to Moeen which way the ball is turning. Not that it matters as he's beaten all ends up trying to cut a ball that was far too close to his off-stump for comfort.

H: Hameed's selection reminds me of when Walcott was picked in the 2006 World Cup. Surely he needed to play in these games pre-India?

Merry Old Tom: Well, at least Cookie saw us past the follow on...

  3. Eng 44-3published at 11 overs

Moeen's prize for dragging England back into the game with the ball is to come out and face a ball that's turning with his side 42-3. He's forward in defence straight away as the Bangladesh fans pound on the advertising boards. Mehedi keeps Moeen honest with a series of deliveries that just drift past the off-stump.

There's an element of luck if you're a batsman there. You've got to play that ball - we saw one which scuttled through for Cook, but Ballance wasn't quite as close to it as he hoped, and it spun enough to brush the bat.

Ballance's first ball spins sharply and he stands and gets his bat out of the way. The second ball is a tad fuller and it takes Ballance's outside edge. Mushfiqur is never dropping that. He keeps his head down as he leaves.

Everyone who I've spoken to who watched the Cook lbw thought it wasn't out and was going down the leg side. It took Bangladesh a while to review it.

Jez Denton, Banbury: Just a thought but if these pitches were seam friendly in County Championship and wickets fell like this wouldn't there be questions be asked of the pitch's suitability to be used?

They have also been known to deduct points for "excessive turn".

  8. Eng 42-2published at 10 overs

Root has decided that defense is the best form of attack. He looks more assured as he comes forward to Shakib, smothering any turn that the left-armer is finding from the pitch. Shakib's searching for the lbw but there's nothing going, and that's a maiden.

It's not over yet, but it feels like it could be soon. It's threatening and dark. Play finishes at 12:00 BST, but I've rather lost track of the overs as they've been taken off the scoreboard.

Jonathan Dale: Their top order and our middle order and you might have a half-decent batting line-up...

Pete Richmond: Ballance needs an innings, and England need one from him right now.

  11. Eng 42-2published at 9 overs

Mehedi spins one past Ballance's attempted defensive poke and sneaks one onto the pads. There's an appeal but it's a muted one. Ballance then has a swipe that sneaks under the bat, onto the pad and past the diving slip fielder. He's looking more confident in defence than he did at Chittagong but that could have been a disastrous shot.

Tim Baker: It's getting to the stage when you actually want Dharmasena to give you out so you get to review it...

David Beckett: If one thing is certain in this game, it's that whatever decision Umpire Dharmasena makes, the aggrieved party should review.

Jeremy Fretter: Sorry, Dharmasena has got to be replaced. He is error prone than any other umpire. Take him out the fire and get his eyes tested.

  13. Eng 39-2published at 8 overs

Shakib has a fantastically overly dramatic way of expressing a near miss. He crouches and spins away in disgust as Root edges past short leg. It's a tighter over though. A single brings Ballance on strike, and he's straight down the wicket to the bowler. He thuds a drive past Shakib, and rather than picking up the boundary it probably deserved, it cannons into the stumps at the non-strikers end. Wry smiles all around.

Shakib's the canniest bowler Bangladesh have, but he's also the slowest and probably spins it the least.

Harry Burch: It took Bangladesh 13 seconds to review that latest decision. Plum out but cutting it fine!

Sam Budgett: Is Dharmasena even watching the game whilst he umpires?

  16. Eng 36-2published at 7 overs

That'll do Ballance's confidence some good, as he gets back to a Mehedi short ball and shovels it away to the boundary. A horrible full toss is then given the treatment, thwacked for another four. The rest of the over is better from Mehedi, a change in length forcing Ballance forward in defence. That's a beauty to finish up with though as it spins past Ballance's defence. A little reminder to the England batsmen to not get too ahead of themselves.

Rob Harvey: Here comes the doom and gloom merchants again! Not seen for three hours but they are back! A Test match is five days long! Judge then.

Simon Goodall: Dharmasena must be hoping the rest of this Test Match is washed out. The poor guy is having a nightmare.

  19. Eng 28-2published at 6 overs

Root doesn't half make a cover drive look elegant, as it flies past a despairing fielder and into the boundary rope. Shakib rolls the ball between his hands and spears the ball fuller. Root comes forward to every ball, solid in defence.
