The ball hardly turned at all, but was smacking into leg stump. 12 wickets have fallen today - 11 of them since about halfway through the middle session. You can't take your eye off the cricket - the crowd were willing Mushfiqur on to review it, and he's got rid of the England captain.

Ballance, who could do with a score, is greeted by a belter of a delivery that bounces and turns away from his defensive prod. He gets his head down for some solid defensive work. The crowd have really woken up despite the gloom as they will Bangladesh on.

Out! He's gonna have to go. That looked, live, like it might be sneaking down the leg side. Actually it's hitting leg about halfway up. Cook shakes his head as he trudges off.

He's right on the back foot, in front of middle and leg. He can't be more than a foot away from the stumps. With the new umpire's call rule, I'm giving that out.

We're going upstairs again. Cook is struck on the back pad by Mehedi, who is convinced he's got his mind. Mushfiqur deliberates and then makes the signal.

Alex Thomas: Ben Duckett is a great player, but he can't play naturally as an opener in these conditions... should be at four & Hameed at two.

Harry Vogt: Hameed in for Ballance and move Duckett down the order where he'll be more effective.

Matt Chapman: That'll be Duckett's Test career over, if people tweeting into #bbccricket, external got their way.

  8. Eng 24-1published at 4 overs

    Shakib 1-8

Shakib has to be the one to get the batsmen under control, and he has Root feeling for a ball that turns. He gets a thick outside edge that lands just to the right of first slip. That probably bounced a little more than he was expecting, and Root wanders down the wicket to give himself a pep talk.

Bangladesh need a bowling partnership to make sure England do not get off to a good start.

Don't bowl there to Cook. Mehedi drops short and Cook has all the time he needs to get on the back foot and drive through the covers. Short, again, and this time Cook flicks his wrists through the on-side for another boundary. He is so comfortable on the back foot, but when Mehedi brings him forward he slashes between the two slips for a more fortunate boundary.

Sadiq Chikte: God knows why England did not pick Haseeb Hameed - disappointing Ben Duckett!

Rae: Why is Duckett in this side and Hameed is NOT, utterly brainless thinking by the selectors, yet again.

Root gets off the mark from his first ball, with a whip off his pads that has Shakib on his knees - he thought that had just snuck through Root's defence. A nice, quiet over to kickstart this England innings...

A very good catch down the leg side for Mushfiqur Rahim. Good comeback from Shakib Al Hasan.

Oh, Ben. Shakib, smarting from that six, spears one down the leg side. Duckett gets a tickle on it and Mushfiqur takes a smart catch. The finger is raised, and England are one down.

Shakib will share the new ball, and there's a statement of intent from Duckett. He's down the track to the second ball and clears the rope with an almighty heave. Shot.

Mehedi opens for Bangladesh and Cook is off the mark straight away, cutting a wide delivery away to point. Duckett follows suit before there's a huge appeal for Cook, caught behind. That's a stunning delivery. It pitched, straightened and went millimeters past Cook's defensive prod. Not out, though, and the England captain survives.
