Magic Mushy opens his account with a sweetly-timed push through the covers off Moeen that brings three and also the 200 for the hosts.

It's almost as if Stokes earned that by bowling really well at Mahmudullah for some time. That wasn't a great ball but it was a horrible shot. He could have left it, he could have smashed it - in the end he sort of poked at it. Stokes is generating stuff out there that the other seamers aren't finding.

  4. Ban 196-4published at 51 overs

    Stokes 1-11 off 9

Mighty mouse Mushfiqur the new man, playing his 50th Test match. He nearly guided Bangladesh to their first Test win over England in the last game, can he do it here? He starts with a resolute defensive shot.

Deserved reward for Stokes and a smart catch by a crouching Cook at first slip, clasping it with hands pointed upwards Australian-style, the ball nestling in his hands rather than his teeth as it might have done had his reactions not been so slick.

So far in the series the seamers are averaging 19.08 runs a wicket, while the spinners are averaging 35 runs a wicket.

  7. Ban 195-3published at 50 overs

    Moeen 2-40 off 13

Shakib, eager to get off the mark having had 13 dots, pushes Moeen to mid-off and scampers through for a single, Woakes missing the target with his throw. Plenty packed in around the attractive two-tier stand with decorative roof that covers a large part of the playing area.

Jack Beecroft: Critical bowling spell now to regain a bit of momentum.

  9. Ban 194-3published at 49 overs

Stokes, with flesh coloured elasticated grips covering both elbows and some of his myriad tattoos, is up in excess of 87mph. He tries a bouncer at Mahmudullah and records a fifth maiden.

Moeen is making it talk a little bit in this spell. I've got a funny feeling, with the way Tamim and Mominul went about it, Shakib isn't going to hang around for too long.

  11. Ban 194-3published at 48 overs

Some watery sun creates shadows of the players on the lush outfield but there are a few dark clouds beyond which may yet produce the storms that were predicted. Moeen has a slip and gully in place and he bowls another maiden to Shakib. They're like buses.

David from Lancashire: Jack Leach has 65 wkts @ 21.88 and Ollie Rayner has 51 @ 23.57, both in Division One. Maybe we should try some players who are bowlers first, not average batting all-rounders or 39-year-olds.

Les from Reading: This "batting down to number 11" idea is getting a tad ridiculous. You should be backing your top seven to get the bulk of the runs. On this logic Courtney Walsh wouldn't get into a modern Test side!

  13. Ban 194-3published at 47 overs

    Stokes 0-10 off 7

Stokes is getting some bounce as well as a probing, accurate line around 83mph, but a rare loose one is driven crisply by Mahmudullah through the covers and the all-rounder concedes his first boundary.

Some of these deliveries are worrying for the England batsmen to look at. The thing that worries me the most today is that it's turning. Bangladesh have gone all out with the spinners. This pitch will only deteriorate and if we see turn from the other end, this could be the best of the batting conditions.

  15. Ban 190-3published at 46 overs

    Moeen 2-39 off 11

Shakib is the new man but there is more spin for Moeen and he also has the distinction of the first maiden by a spinner. A wicket maiden too.

A second wicket for Moeen and this one just cramps the left-hander, it takes an inside edge and rattles into the timbers.

Stokes is the only bowler who's consistently looked threatening in these conditions. Pretty much all the others, there's been at least one loose ball in each over.

  18. Ban 190-2published at 45 overs

    Stokes 0-6 off 6

England's talisman Stokes is back in the attack and Mahmudullah is immediately mindful as the ball straightens off the seam outside off-stump. England will hope for some reverse swing-inspired spells from their all-rounder as the day progresses. A fourth maiden in six overs from Stokes and he remains the only England bowler not to concede a boundary.

Francis Edwards: I never enjoy gloating, but where are all those people that insisted two months ago that Adil Rashid was the answer?

James Brown: Ballance picked AGAIN. Why? Surely this was the opportunity to try Hameed? Doubtful he will play against India now.

  20. Ban 190-2published at 44 overs

    Mominul 66, Mahmudullah 9

Moeen still has a few malfunctions with the radar and Bangladesh collect four leg byes with one wide of the pads offering little chance for Bairstow to stop it up at the stumps.
