Bangladesh, because they've taken the attack to England from ball one, it feels as though it has thrown the bowlers off. They're always nervous a shot like that is coming. If they had poked around England would have got on top.

Re: Spinners needing to bat [34 overs]. It's partly because, excluding these tracks in Bangladesh, spin usually only has a decisive impact later in the game. Therefore, some other element needed to justify not playing with 10 for 50% of the game.

Root and Stokes are packed in at slip and gully to new man Mahmudullah, but he's far from fazed and he lofts Rashid down the ground imperiously for the first maximum of the match. Much to ponder over the isotonics at the drinks break.

Bob Hawkins: The two best words in the English language..'umpire's call'.

Russell Anderson: If this is our spin attack in India, Lara's 400 will go, and that's regardless of what their spinners will do to our top order.

  6. Ban 176-2published at 42 overs

    Moeen 1-37 off 9

Oh Moeen. After Mahmudullah gets away with a leg glance just wide of the leg gully fielder, England's spinning all-rounder sends down a half-tracker that Mominul has all the time to rock back to and dispatch to the fence.

After all those shots, Tamim has been given out not playing a shot. The replays show that the ball was clipping off-stump, it is down as umpire's call and, to the silence of the crowd, Tamim is on his way.

  8. Umpire reviewpublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 28 October 2016

England could have a breakthrough. Umpire Dharmasena has given Tamim out lbw but it has been reviewed.

Rich Law: For years we needed three spinners in subcontinent. Two Tests later we need to revert to seam cause our spinners aren't good enough.

  10. Ban 171-1published at 41 overs

The wrong'un from Rashid and it spins extravagantly past the outside edge of a bemused Tamim. Another one takes the edge and races past slip, with the industrious Bairstow racing after it to collect just short of the boundary. A moral victory for Rashid but the cold, hard facts are three more runs for the home side.

That was Tamim's eighth Test hundred and his third against England. He's currently averaging 69.3 against England.

It's an excellent innings. He's got a double hundred before against Pakistan. It's a long way to go but he should bat on and on for Bangladesh.

His eighth Test hundred and it has come from 139 balls. The attacking left-hander came dancing down the pitch to Moeen and lofted consecutive boundaries over the in-field to the cover boundary. The crowd are even cheering resolute forward defensive shots now.

Sam Shephard: Got to be one of England's worst bowling performances in recent times, surely?

  15. Ban 159-1published at 39 overs

    Rashid 0-33 off 8

So no storm, no wicket and no sign of a maiden from an England spinner as Rashid is comfortably milked for singles on either side of the wicket.

It's really good, positive batting from Bangladesh. They've thrown the gauntlet down here.

  17. Ban 156-1published at 38 overs

    Tamim 91, Momimul 59

Moeen returns after six overs for 23 before lunch. Just the single from his opening delivery. Thunderstorms are predicted for mid-afternoon but no sign yet. No sign of a wicket either.

  19. Ban 155-1published at 37 overs

    Rashid 0-30 off 7

Rashid has a slip and Gary Ballance under the helmet at leg gully, but they are the only fielders close to the bat. Tamim drives the final ball for a single and still there is no maiden for a spinner.

The problem is, he can't bowl Stokes all day - he bowled five overs before lunch, and [with the schedule] they can't burn him out in Bangladesh.
