Woakes would be a good nightwatchman but if he gets in tomorrow early that's fine as he can bat. I only like to use a nightwatchman if the light is poor or the pitch is bad.

  2. Eng 298-4published at 89 overs

Stokes takes a single off the final ball of Yadav's over so keeps the bowling.

A lesson from Bangladesh is you can't let up in any session as it can run away from you if you do.

  4. Eng 297-4published at 88 overs

    Moeen 96, Stokes 8

Moeen is down the track to Ashwin, looking for the boundary that would take him to three figures but it was not there to hit and he nonchalantly pads it away. Still 12 minutes to make those runs.

This is where England have to be mentally better. They've played really well but they have to concentrate. They mustn't give it away.

Francis Edwards: I feel like Moeen's contribution to the team is so under valued. More wickets, more vital runs and almost more 100s than Stokes

Laura Cooney: 'How is the presidency of America more important than England batting?' Never change, @GeoffreyBoycott, external. Never change

Totum: So glad we batted 1st now. Sets the test & series up so nicely - I had feared the worst. Class is permanent & Root is class

  8. Eng 293-4published at 87 overs

    Moeen 95, Stokes 5

Moeen, having swished and missed at one from Yadav, plays a delightful drive to the boundary. There are again comparisons with David Gower, but I tell you, there was no-one who played with the style and panache of DI Gower.

Either you're going to bowl or you're not. The umpire should just tell him to go off. It's not fair on the crowd. It's ridiculous.

Shami is on his haunches again. The physio re-emerges in his blue t-shirt and tailored shorts and he is to stretch Shami's leg as the bowler lays on the turf with his hands behind his head. The over is eventually completed, with Moeen driving another elegant single, but the physio is clearly expecting to be called upon again and takes a seat by the boundary to save time.

I don't think India will give the new ball to the pacemen, but they might give it to Ashwin while Stokes is still tentative in his innings. Ashwin has bowled a lot of overs today, mind.

    Moeen 89, Stokes 5

There is a smattering of loyal England supporters, and a couple of them are avoiding the problem of sunburn by sporting those huge ZZ Top-style beards that resemble an unkempt hedge. How long do they take to grow? Can a beard be burned by the sun? The burly Yadav is up at 90mph but Stokes helps him round the corner and picks up his first boundary.

Moeen is closing in on what would be a very good hundred. This has been as good as I've seen him bat.

  15. Eng 283-4published at 84 overs

    Moeen 89, Stokes 1

Shami shuffles in again with his dicky leg, but still up at 85mph. Stokes is away with a single, after three previous ducks against India.

It's all over in Colombo and England have cruised to an eight-wicket victory in the first one-dayer against Sri Lanka with 20.3 overs to spare.

Captain Heather Knight starred with bat and ball, taking 2-29 before her unbeaten 45 helped the tourists reach 171-2 to overhaul Sri Lanka's 169-7.

Nat Sciver hit the winning runs and finished on 47 from 40 balls.

The second game of four-match series is on Saturday and counts towards the ICC Women’s Championship - England will qualify for next year's World Cup if they win it.

  18. Eng 281-4published at 83 overs

    Moeen 88, Stokes 0

Two slips and a gully for Stokes. The left-hander follows one from Yadav that bounces extravagantly and holds its light at pace, but there is no touch and no review. Only the second maiden for Yadav.

How is that Root dismissal different from a scenario where a wicketkeeper or diving fielder catches the ball but it gets dislodged when they hit the ground? They have the ball in their hands for a short period as well. He never had full control of that ball and he knew it by the way he chased it.

If I was Kohli, I'd be trying to get Ashwin into the attack to face Stokes because that would be the most taxing thing for him this early in his innings.
