But Shami is able to complete the final two balls of the over, up to 86mph. It looks more like cramp than a hamstring, nothing like Derek Redmond that time.

  2. ouch!

    Eng 281-4published at 81.4 overs

Shami is able to share the new ball after that earlier hamstring scare. He traps a static Moeen on the pad but it is heading way down the leg side. There is no review and the old hammy has gone again. The bowler slumps disconsolately to the turf and calls for the physio. We may have a delay here so it might be time to put the kettle on. I wish someone would here.

Dave: Anyone else expecting a good old England collapse to finish the day now that Root has gone?

Mickey Wallis: We would be foolish to forget that Virat Kohli also will be batting on this wicket at some point. We need 500 at least

I have to say my gut feeling was not out. The giveaway for me was the way Yadav chased after it. I don't think the slow-motion replays did Joe Root any favours. My other thought there was why go to the third umpire? There is nothing there you haven't seen on the field. Remember Herschelle Gibbs throwing it up off Steve Waugh in the 1999 World Cup?

  6. Eng 281-4published at 81 overs

Ben Stokes is the new batsman and after an impromptu break when the fielders converge, he shoulders arms to the final ball of Yadav's over. Success for the home side, albeit in unusual circumstances.

  7. England women closing on victorypublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    First ODI, Colombo

England women are nearly there - the tourists are 140-2 after 24 overs, cantering to their target of 169 to beat Sri Lanka in the first one-day international in Colombo.

Skipper Heather Knight is unbeaten on 36 and Nat Sciver is on 26 with this pair adding 51.

Chris Harden: Ridiculous how an on field umprire can't make this decision. Not helping themselves anymore

Arjun Sohanpal: I'm sorry, but that did not look out to me. No way did he have complete control over that catch

George Moore: India haven't got much to Moeen about - England have been the better side so far

Yadav caught it, threw it up and because he wasn't able to recover it, there was a question mark but he had the ball in his hands for enough time.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 10:03 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    Root c and b Yadav 124 (Eng 281-4)

The officials are satisfied it was a clean catch. Not so sure Root is and he is looking back rather forlornly as he makes his way to the pavilion.

  11. Umpire reviewpublished at 10:01 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

Yadav takes up the attack and there is confusion over whether Root is caught and bowled. The umpires are looking at the evidence. The bowler caught the ball cleanly but was it then a juggle or a celebratory throw into the air when he couldn't then catch it?

The way this pair have got after Ashwin with the sweeps and the lofted shots, they're making a statement.

England should be clearly happy at this stage because even if they collapse, they'll get another 100 runs. 375 would be a good score and would allow them to have attacking fielding positions when they bowl.

  13. Eng 278-3published at 80 overs

    Root 123, Moeen 86

Another stylish Moeen drive brings him an eighth boundary. The first hint of weariness from the indefatigable Root as he hobbles a fraction in ambling through for a single to Moeen off Ashwin. The new ball is due - an India urgently need a wicket.

India started as the favourites after the way they beat New Zealand and England lost to Bangladesh. Because England bat deep and this is the first Test at Rajkot, it was never going to be a turner and it would be hard to get a result. I'm thinking it will be 3-0 to India and two draws.

Saud Ahmed: England seem to have got their MoJo in this Test so far

Ryan Williams: Key to this partnership has been the ability to Rootate the strike

Jukebox Jack: The further this Root innings goes the more Cook will rue not reviewing that lbw decision! Great to see some fight from England!

  18. Eng 270-3published at 78 overs

    Root 122, Moeen 79

Ashwin has not had much to get excited about but there is half a raised hand as Moeen sweeps. There was bat on it through as it went away fine and the batsmen take three. Root then makes solid contact with his sweep to the final ball and it races away for his 11th four.

  19. Eng 263-3published at 77 overs

    partnership 161

Root is still remarkably light on his feet for a man who has been out in the cauldron of the centre since the 16th over. He races through for a quick two off Jadeja. Excellent accumulation.

  20. England women need 64 from 30 overspublished at 09:45 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    First ODI, Colombo

England have lost both openers but remain well on course to beat Sri Lanka in the first one-day international in Colombo.

The tourists are 105-2 20 overs in, chasing 169 to win, after Tammy Beaumont made 41 and Lauren Winfield 33.

Captain Heather Knight is at the crease now on 18 with Nat Sciver on nine.
