We've seen some silky strokeplay from Cheteshwar Pujara and a valiant innings from Murali Vijay lasting 483 minutes, but England stuck to their task and were rewarded with those two late wickets to make the scoreboard look a little more respectable.

England coach Paul Farbrace on Sky Sports: "Going into the last 10 minutes we were saying one more wicket will give the boys a lift but to get two has been huge. To only give away 60-odd runs in that middle session is outstanding on that pitch.

"The breakthroughs show the importance of keeping going all day, holding in there for as long as you can on a flat pitch. One early wicket tomorrow and we are in a very good position. We think we have done particularly well today.

"The spinners held the Indian batsmen in these conditions. Our spinners showed they have learnt a lot from the Bangladesh experience.

"There is a lot of cricket left to play so we are not getting carried away."

Just to run through the breakdown of the sessions for you, in the morning India scored 99 in 27 overs for the loss of that one early wicket, in the afternoon England were wicketless but conceded only 66 in 29 overs and in the final session 91 were added in 29.3 overs with three wickets going down.

I think Rashid has done well and Alastair has used him well. He has given him short spells and the batters weren't able to get used to him. 

All you can do is a professional performance. Maybe, in the end, England have just shaded the day.

I thought India won the first session of the day comfortably. Pujara played beautifully and Vijay played well. England won the afternoon, hands down - 66 runs in 29 overs? They fielded like tigers. People ran hard, saved twos, saved threes. It was a really good performance.

Through the evening session, they did the same thing and I think India missed a trick - they should have moved it on. In the end, from nowhere at all, they got their reward.

You can't say it was a great day for England but they got something out of it. 

Centurion Cheteshwar Pujara on Sky Sports: "I think England bowled good lines but I knew that if I stayed in there I can get my shots on loose balls. Sometimes you have to respect international bowlers when they are bowling well in Test matches.

"If we can bat well on day four then we can be positive going into day five as I expect the ball to start turning more on day five. Here in India you always expect more turn at least by day four."

I thought the pitch has played very well from a batting point of view. Many of the seamers on both sides have bowled really well but it hasn't done anything for them. They have given everything.

It's been an interesting day and just came to life a little more at the end with those two wickets. 

India resumed on 63-1 and lost Gautam Gambhir to the first ball of the second over, a wicket for Stuart Broad in his 100th Test.

The hosts scored 99 for the loss of that one wicket in the 27-over session to reach 162-1 at lunch. Cheteshwar Pujara was given out lbw on 86 but successfully reviewed the decision and survived being hit on the head three times by bouncers to make a superb century full of strokeplay, witnessed by his proud father.

Pujara put on 209 with Murali Vijay, who was dropped by Haseeb Hameed on 66 but went on to make 126 in a marathon innings spanning 483 minutes.

England claimed two wickets in four balls at the end of the day, Hameed taking the catch both times, with India closing 218 behind.

A little boost and you can't begrudge it for England. It's particularly pleasing that it's Ansari and Rashid who have taken the wickets and that's a better catch from Hameed who took it low down by his ankles.

So India close day three of the first Test still 218 runs behind, with six wickets intact.

If the pitch does not deteriorate then this is not a good pitch for Test cricket but in this part of the world things can happen, pitches can deteriorate very quickly. It is not like in England where it is sometimes easier to bat on day four than it is on day one.

It's like an album guys, sometimes you have to give it time to appreciate the intricacies and subtle nuances. I'm enjoying Tom Chaplin's debut LP. He loves his cricket. Will there be a tidal "wave" of wickets tomorrow? Accurate again from Woakes, just the single conceded. But you're right, it might well be a draw.
